ASML Strengthens Market Lead with Key Semiconductor Manufacturing Breakthrough

The Dutch semiconductor equipment giant ASML has unveiled a major advancement in its extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems. This development, centered on a core component, significantly enhances machine performance and could reshape chip production capacity for the industry's leading manufacturers.
A Leap in Production Capacity
At the heart of the update is a powerful enhancement to the EUV light source. Engineers at ASML's research facilities near San Diego, California, have successfully doubled the power output from 600 watts to 1,000 watts. Crucially, this milestone was achieved under conditions that mimic actual customer production environments, not just a controlled laboratory setting.
Michael Purvis, ASML's senior technology leader for EUV sources, confirmed to Reuters that the system "can produce 1,000 watts under all the requirements you would see at a customer." This increased power translates directly into higher manufacturing throughput. According to Teun van Gogh, responsible for ASML's NXE product line, chipmakers could process approximately 330 silicon wafers per hour per machine by the end of this decade, a substantial increase from the current rate of 220.
The Engineering Behind the Power Surge
This performance breakthrough stems from two key innovations within the tin-droplet plasma process. First, the company doubled the frequency of tin droplets fired through the chamber each second to approximately 100,000. Second, engineers devised a new method to convert these droplets into plasma using two smaller laser pulses instead of the previous single-pulse approach.
Commenting on the achievement, Jorge J. Rocca, a professor at Colorado State University, stated, "What has been achieved—one kilowatt—is quite impressive." ASML's own outlook remains ambitious; Purvis indicated the company sees "a relatively clear path to 1,500 watts and no fundamental reason why we couldn't get to 2,000 watts."
Strategic Timing Amid Growing Competition
The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for the industry. Competition is intensifying, with at least two U.S. startups—Substrate and xLight—having raised hundreds of millions in funding to develop alternatives to ASML's EUV technology. xLight is also receiving support from a U.S. government initiative. Simultaneously, China has launched a national program aimed at developing its own EUV-capable machines, a direct response to export controls that restrict ASML's shipments to the country.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Asml?
By advancing the most technically demanding part of its systems, ASML aims to widen its technological moat and solidify its advantage over these emerging rivals.
A Foundation of Financial Strength
ASML's latest innovation is supported by robust financial health. For the full year 2025, the company reported net sales of €32.7 billion and a net profit of €9.6 billion. The fourth quarter alone delivered record sales of €9.7 billion with a gross margin of 52.2%. Its order backlog stood at €38.8 billion at the end of 2025, and management has provided a revenue forecast ranging between €34 billion and €39 billion for 2026.
Complementing these results, a share buyback program of up to €12 billion, announced in January, is underway. During the week of February 16-20, the company repurchased 101,512 of its own shares for a total of €123.2 million.
Looking Ahead
ASML is scheduled to publish its full 2025 annual report on February 25. The subsequent quarterly update will follow on April 15, 2026. This technological leap in light source power reinforces the company's critical role in the global semiconductor supply chain, particularly as AI-driven demand continues to fuel massive capacity expansion across the chip industry.
