A Milestone in Light Source Power

At its facility near San Diego, ASML has conducted a real-world demonstration of an EUV light source achieving 1,000 watts of power. This marks a considerable jump from the approximately 600 watts generated by current systems in operation. The engineering breakthrough enabling this leap involves a fundamental change in process: instead of utilizing a single laser pulse, the system now employs two laser "shots" to transform tin droplets into plasma. Furthermore, the droplet frequency has been doubled to about 100,000 per second.

For semiconductor manufacturers, this increased power translates directly into shorter exposure times during the chip patterning process. The practical implications are lower per-unit costs and higher output from each lithography machine. According to reports, ASML anticipates that customers could achieve roughly 330 wafers per hour per tool by the end of the decade, a significant increase from today's rate of about 220. This represents a potential productivity gain of approximately 50%.

Perhaps most notably, the company has indicated that the underlying technology provides "a fairly clear path" toward 1,500 watts. ASML has also suggested there is no fundamental technical barrier preventing the eventual achievement of 2,000 watts, though the timeline for a commercial product at that level remains uncertain.

A Strategic Move in a Growing Competitive Field

This announcement arrives at a pivotal moment. Reports from late 2025 indicated that Chinese researchers in Shenzhen have constructed an EUV prototype. Simultaneously, at least two well-funded U.S. startups, Substrate and xLight, are developing alternative technologies. The light source is widely regarded as one of the most technically challenging components within an EUV system. A lead in this area represents control over a central bottleneck in the entire EUV value chain, making ASML's progress a strong statement of its ongoing technological dominance.

Financial Momentum and Shareholder Returns

Alongside this technical news, ASML disclosed its latest share repurchase activity. During the week of February 16 to 20, the company bought back 101,512 of its own shares for a total of approximately €123.2 million. This activity falls under a €12 billion buyback program announced in January.

The company's operational performance provides a solid foundation for such returns. ASML is coming off a record year in 2025, posting revenue of €32.7 billion and net profit of €9.6 billion.
