ASML's Lofty Valuation Weighs on Investor Sentiment
23.03.2026 - 07:45:14 | boerse-global.deShares of the Dutch semiconductor equipment giant are facing headwinds in the equity markets. While the company's long-term prospects in advanced chipmaking machinery remain robust, investor mood is being dampened by a demanding valuation. Compounding this pressure are expectations for a decline in its lucrative Chinese business, which is clouding near-term growth visibility.
The recent decline of just over nine percent in the stock price on a monthly basis is not primarily linked to company-specific news. Instead, broader macroeconomic concerns, including interest rates and inflation, have triggered a general retreat from technology stocks. A key internal factor is the normalization of regional revenue streams. Company leadership anticipates that revenue from China will fall to approximately 20 percent by 2026, following an unusually high contribution in the prior year. Concurrently, the equity is trading at a historically rich price-to-earnings multiple above 49, which leaves little room for operational disappointments.
Upcoming Catalysts: Earnings and Executive Changes
Investors are looking ahead to two pivotal events in mid-April. On April 15, the firm will release its first-quarter financial results. Guidance projects net sales between €8.2 billion and €8.9 billion, with a gross margin of up to 53 percent. Just one week later, on April 22, the annual general meeting will convene in Veldhoven, where a significant reshuffle of the executive board is on the agenda:
* The nomination of Marco Pieters for the role of Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
* A proposed four-year contract extension for Chief Financial Officer Roger Dassen.
* Benjamin Loh, former CEO of ASM International, is nominated to join the supervisory board.
AI Demand Underpins the Long-Term Thesis
Despite short-term volatility, the company's fundamental position is exceptionally strong. ASML maintains a virtual monopoly in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, a technology critical for manufacturing the most advanced artificial intelligence chips. The next-generation High-NA EUV system is gradually reaching commercial scale, with Intel recently qualifying such a tool for high-volume manufacturing.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML?
Demand for this equipment is directly fueled by the sustained AI boom. In mid-March, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang forecast AI chip orders reaching at least $1 trillion by 2027. This immense end-customer demand provides a solid foundation for the Dutch equipment maker's business. With an order backlog of roughly €41.9 billion, ASML enjoys unusually high visibility in an otherwise cyclical industry. The imminent quarterly report will offer investors the next concrete data point on operational performance, shortly before the AGM sets the leadership course for the coming years.
