UBS raises ASML price target to €1,900 citing AI-led EUV demand, but Nikon's aggressive DUV pricing and geopolitical risks loom. Stock near 52-week high.

ASML enters June with a split narrative. UBS has lifted its price target on the Dutch lithography giant from €1,600 to €1,900, reaffirming a buy rating and citing the company’s “unique position” in European semiconductors. Yet at the same time, rival Nikon is preparing a price offensive in the deep ultraviolet segment that could test ASML’s margins in the second half of the year.

The stock closed May at €1,388.60, up 0.73% on the final trading day and 40.50% year to date. Over the past 30 days, gains have reached 16.26%. The shares sit just 2.27% below the 52-week high of €1,420.80 hit in late May.

Conference Season Opens with Key Questions

ASML’s management is scheduled to appear at two prominent investor gatherings this week: the Evercore Global TMT Conference and the BofA Global Technology Conference. The events give executives a platform to address the tensions building beneath the company’s robust top-line outlook.

Three topics are likely to dominate the discussion. First, the ramp of High-NA EUV systems — more than 60 units are slated for delivery in 2026, making progress a critical barometer for investors. Second, the stability of the €38.8 billion order backlog in the face of new competitive pressure. Third, the recently signed memorandum of understanding with Tata Electronics to develop front-end manufacturing capacity in India.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Asml?

Nikon’s DUV Attack

Nikon’s strategy targets the DUV and specialized lithography segments directly below ASML’s near-monopoly in High-NA EUV. By adopting aggressive pricing, the Japanese competitor hopes to claw back market share. The risk for ASML is that chipmakers become more price-sensitive on DUV investments, potentially weighing on order intake and margin trends in the second half of the year. The €38.8 billion backlog provides a cushion, but it is not a defence against broad-based price compression.

Asian Expansion on Two Fronts

Despite the competitive threat, ASML is deepening its footprint in Asia. The Tata Electronics agreement aims to support India’s nascent semiconductor ecosystem as the country builds its own front-end capacity. Separately, the company plans to hire 1,000 additional staff in Taiwan this year — nearly double its original target of 600 — focusing on customer support, manufacturing, and supply chain. The hiring surge mirrors the capacity expansion of Taiwanese clients racing to produce AI hardware.

AI Tailwind Keeps EUV Demand Hot

UBS sees ASML as a primary beneficiary of the artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout. Increasing technical demands for high-performance chips are driving orders for Extreme Ultraviolet systems, and ASML’s exposure to the North American market and next-generation lithography roadmap support the bullish thesis. The stock trades around 44 times forward earnings on some models, with annualised volatility of 45.48%.

Geopolitical Shadow

Regulatory uncertainty persists. U.S. lawmakers have proposed further curbs on servicing advanced DUV immersion tools in certain international markets. The Dutch government has expressed concern over the “extraterritorial” nature of the planned restrictions. CEO Christophe Fouquet has warned that tighter export controls could accelerate the development of competing technologies in the affected regions, though ASML still expects any changes to licence requirements will not derail its long-term financial scenarios. Investors await fresh signals from the Dutch foreign trade ministry on new licence rules expected this year.

Technical and Valuation Check

Chart-wise, ASML is robust. The stock trades roughly 11% above its 50-day moving average and has the RSI near 50, suggesting room to move in either direction. But the valuation remains a talking point. With a price-to-earnings multiple above 50 times trailing earnings, there is little margin for disappointment. If the conference appearances signal any downward revision to the 2026 revenue target — previously pegged between €36 billion and €40 billion — the market reaction could be swift and severe.
