As Inactivity Deepens, Balance Becomes the New Fix for Body and Mind

The humble balance board is having a moment. Once relegated to physiotherapy clinics, the devices are now a viral summer trend across German-speaking Europe. On platforms like willhaben, near-new wooden models sell for around €30. Proponents claim the training relieves foot strain and boosts overall health — and the timing could not be better.
The surge in popularity reflects a growing recognition that coordination exercises offer a low-barrier route to physical activity. And evidence suggests that need has become urgent.
Children’s fitness hits a post-pandemic low
The 2026 fitness barometer from the Kinderturnstiftung Baden-Württemberg, a foundation promoting children’s physical education, found that the fitness index for children has dropped to 53.2 points. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the figure stood at 57.0. The data comes from tests on 6,432 children.
The same study links higher activity levels not only to stronger bodies but also to better mental health. In response, experts are pushing for playful interventions. The ASKÖ Tirol, a regional sports organisation, now runs mobile fitness festivals featuring slack boards to sharpen coordination skills.
Walking 3,000 steps to slow Alzheimer’s
Medical research is also turning to equilibrium. Studies on Alzheimer’s prevention indicate that as few as 3,000 steps per day can slow the accumulation of tau proteins in the brain. Raise that to 5,000–7,500 steps, and the protective effect becomes significantly stronger.
Since May 2026, a blood test for early detection has been approved across the European Union. In rehabilitation centres, high-tech tools are also gaining traction. The C-Mill treadmill in Kempten, for example, uses virtual reality to improve gait safety in patients recovering from stroke, Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis.
Art explores the theme of balance
The concept of equilibrium has even entered the cultural sphere. On 12 July, the exhibition “Balance trifft Spectrum” opened in Ellwangen, showcasing steel sculptures and paintings. In Schwäbisch Gmünd, the show “Gleichgewicht’störung” runs until 6 September at the Labor im Chor gallery. A vernissage featuring 3D-printed works and silversmith pieces is scheduled for 16 July.
Whether as a fitness tool, a therapeutic device or an art motif, balance is moving centre stage. And it arrives at a moment when physical inactivity has become a systemic challenge — one that no single solution can solve alone.
