Arista Networks delivered a textbook earnings beat, yet the market responded with a punishing sell-off that erased 14% of the company’s value on Wednesday. The disconnect between stellar operational performance and a sharp share price decline underscores a growing tension: surging demand for AI networking infrastructure is colliding head-on with persistent component shortages that the company says could last well into 2027.

The Bottleneck That Won’t Quit

CEO Jayshree Ullal described the current demand environment as the strongest she has seen in her tenure, but she tempered that optimism with a stark warning. Lead times for critical components such as silicon wafers, memory chips, and specialized storage have stretched to as long as 52 weeks. These supply constraints are expected to weigh on gross margins for an extended period, creating what the company calls a “gating factor” that limits how quickly it can convert record orders into revenue.

The market’s reaction was swift and brutal. By Thursday, the stock had settled at €120.80 in European trading, roughly 20% below its 52-week high of €151.80. On Friday morning, shares staged a modest recovery to around €122.50, still nursing a double-digit loss from the week’s peak. In dollar terms, the stock was changing hands near $177.

Record Numbers, Conservative Guidance

The first-quarter results themselves were anything but disappointing. Revenue surged 35% year-over-year to approximately $2.7 billion, while adjusted earnings per share of $0.87 came in ahead of analyst expectations. Operating margins remained exceptionally healthy at nearly 48%, and the company generated a record $1.69 billion in free cash flow during the quarter.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Arista Networks?

For the full year 2026, Arista raised its revenue forecast to roughly $11.5 billion, representing growth of about 28%. The company also provided a second-quarter outlook calling for sequential revenue growth to $2.8 billion. Yet these upward revisions failed to reassure investors fixated on the supply chain headwinds.

AI Ambitions Undimmed

The bright spot remains Arista’s expanding footprint in AI networking infrastructure. The company now expects AI-related revenue to reach $3.5 billion in 2026, up sharply from prior forecasts. To support this push, Arista unveiled a new optical interconnect technology called “XPO,” which the company claims can reduce data center space requirements by up to 75%.

The order backlog stands at over $3.6 billion, providing strong visibility into future quarters. JPMorgan maintained its “Overweight” rating with a $200 price target, pointing to the robust pipeline as evidence that the demand story remains intact.

Analyst Divergence on Valuation

Wall Street’s reaction has been mixed but leans constructive. Barclays raised its price target to $195, while Rosenblatt and BNP Paribas set targets of $210 and $200 respectively. These banks view the post-earnings pullback as a buying opportunity, betting that AI-driven demand will ultimately outweigh supply constraints.

Arista Networks at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Citigroup struck a more cautious note, cutting its target to $176 and highlighting a decline in net margins from 40.7% to 38.3% year-over-year. The bank’s analysts argued that while the top-line story is compelling, margin compression from component shortages could persist longer than the market expects.

The Year-Ahead Picture

Despite the recent volatility, Arista shares have still gained over 55% in the past twelve months and roughly 60% on a one-year view. The company now faces a critical test: proving that its supply chain can keep pace with what Ullal calls “the strongest demand of my career.” The next major checkpoint will come with second-quarter results, where investors will be watching closely for any signs that the bottleneck is easing — or worsening.
