Five years following their merger, ams Osram has announced a significant strategic milestone. The company has overtaken the Japanese LED giant Nichia to claim global market leadership in the LED lighting segment. CEO Aldo Kamper confirmed this development on Thursday in Munich.

Strategic Focus and Growth Drivers

The company's technological strategy is now framed under "Digital Photonics," focusing on intelligent optical semiconductor solutions that integrate both emitting and sensing components. Beyond its core automotive business, management identifies potential in augmented reality glasses, biosensors, and optical connectivity solutions for AI data centers.

A primary growth anchor is the automotive sector, where ams Osram's market position is notably strong. Nearly all major global vehicle manufacturers source components from the company. A key growth driver is the EVIYOS technology—high-resolution headlight systems that enable precise light control and enhance road safety. For this segment, Kamper forecasts revenue will surpass €100 million for the first time by 2028.

Financial Restructuring and Market Challenges

Financially, the "Simplify" cost-cutting program aims for leaner cost structures. Concurrently, the capital-light IP licensing business around the OSRAM brand is being expanded. Portfolio optimizations and divestments are intended to significantly reduce the company's debt ratio.

The market environment remains challenging. Currency effects, particularly related to the US dollar, continue to pressure revenue development. The share price currently trades approximately 9% below its 200-day moving average, indicating the market has not yet fully priced in the operational progress. All eyes will be on the quarterly results for Q1 2026, due on May 7, which will reveal whether the targeted return to profitability by 2027 remains on track.
