The Austrian chipmaker is running two races at once. On one track, a blistering 48% share rally in 30 sessions has pushed the stock to €13.75, just shy of its 52-week peak. On the other, the company is grinding through a painful portfolio overhaul while currency headwinds and a smartphone slump eat into earnings. The quarterly results due on May 7 will reveal which track has the firmer footing.

The MicroLED Bet That Could Reshape Data Centers

The most eye-catching piece of Ams Osram’s long-term strategy is a technology originally designed for car headlights. Its EVIYOS MicroLED array, first developed for adaptive automotive lighting, is now being repurposed for optical interconnects in AI data centers. In March, the company announced a prototype upgrade that pushes switching frequencies beyond 1 GHz while consuming less than 2 picojoules per bit.

That energy efficiency is the killer feature. Traditional laser transmitters generate far more heat, and data center operators are watching cooling costs spiral. By slashing power draw, Ams Osram’s MicroLEDs could offer a meaningful solution. The technology is also gaining traction in the automotive world—the Audi Q3 will feature it in the compact SUV segment, demonstrating that the manufacturing process scales beyond niche applications.

Analyst sentiment is split. UBS’s Harry Blaiklock raised his price target to CHF 13.40 and reiterated a buy rating, projecting MicroLED arrays for AI interconnects could contribute roughly 5% of group revenue by 2030. Barclays is more cautious, cutting its target to CHF 10 and flagging cyclical risks for European hardware suppliers alongside persistent weakness in smartphone markets.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ams Osram?

The Cost of Restructuring

While the long-term narrative is compelling, the near-term numbers are under pressure. A strong US dollar and volatile precious metal prices are expected to shave around €50 million off earnings. The smartphone downturn is compounding the pain, hitting the sensor business particularly hard as handset makers adjust product cycles.

Management is fighting back with a radical portfolio cleanup. The sale of the entertainment and industrial lighting business to Japan’s Ushio closed in early March, netting €114 million. The bigger prize is the planned disposal of the analog sensor division to Infineon, expected to close in the second quarter and bring in roughly €570 million. Together, the two deals should deliver around €670 million, enough to cut the leverage ratio from 3.3 to approximately 2.5.

That deleveraging is critical. It gives the company breathing room to invest in the MicroLED ramp-up and weather the current headwinds. But the Infineon deal still needs antitrust clearance, and the timeline remains uncertain—investors will be watching the next earnings call for updates.

Ams Osram at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What the Numbers Say

For the first quarter, Ams Osram expects revenue of roughly €760 million and an operating margin of about 15%. That’s a far cry from the long-term target of over 25%, but the company points to a design-win pipeline exceeding €5 billion from 2025 as evidence that the growth story has substance.

The stock has cooled slightly from its recent highs, giving back about 5% to trade around €12.98. The May 7 report will test whether the operational foundation can support the rally. Key metrics to watch: margin trajectory, the status of the Infineon deal, and any updates on MicroLED commercialization timelines. For now, Ams Osram is a story of two speeds—one racing ahead on AI optimism, the other grinding through a messy but necessary transformation.
