The ongoing corporate transformation at ams Osram is gaining momentum, with a clear strategic focus emerging: monetizing its storied OSRAM brand through licensing. This capital-light approach is becoming a cornerstone of the company's new direction, as evidenced by its latest partnership.

Licensing Deals Drive Capital-Light Strategy

In a significant move, Chinese lighting specialist Eaglerise will begin licensing LED drivers under the OSRAM brand for the APAC and EMEA regions starting in March 2026. This transition is designed to be seamless. It follows the expiration of a previous brand licensing cooperation for LED drivers on April 3, 2026, with Eaglerise assuming the role effective immediately. For ams Osram, this agreement translates to licensing income without the associated production risks in a volume-driven market segment.

The Eaglerise deal is not an isolated case. Since launching its dedicated IP offering program in 2025, ams Osram has secured several similar agreements. These include partnerships with EURES GmbH for consumer batteries and Ziwooo Biotechnology for health and beauty products. The pattern is consistent: the company is systematically converting its heritage brand into a streamlined source of earnings.

Portfolio Reshaping and Debt Reduction

This licensing strategy is being executed alongside a deliberate reshaping of the company's asset portfolio through divestitures. In early March, ams Osram finalized the sale of its entertainment and industrial lamps business to Ushio Inc. for 114 million euros.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ams Osram?

A more substantial transaction is on the horizon. The anticipated acquisition of the sensor business by Infineon for 570 million euros is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, pending regulatory approvals. Collectively, management expects these transactions to reduce the company's net debt-to-EBITDA ratio from 3.3 to approximately 2.5.

Near-Term Headwinds and Future Targets

Despite the strategic progress, the near-term operating environment presents challenges. The company's current quarter is facing significant pressure from currency effects and volatile precious metal prices. The strength of the US dollar alone is projected to negatively impact results by around 50 million euros and is likely to contribute to a sequential revenue decline of up to 19 percent.

Investors will gain clearer insight into these dynamics when ams Osram reports its first-quarter 2026 results on May 7. The report will reveal the extent to which nascent licensing revenue and ongoing efficiency programs have helped offset weaker sales trends.

Ams Osram at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Looking to the medium term, the company's "Simplify" savings program outlines ambitious goals. ams Osram is targeting an adjusted EBITDA margin of at least 25 percent, alongside annual growth rates in the mid-to-high single-digit percentage range through 2030.
