Ams Osram's 120th Anniversary: A Celebration Amidst Profound Restructuring
26.02.2026 - 16:11:30 | boerse-global.de
While Ams Osram marks the 120th anniversary of the OSRAM brand, the celebratory mood is tempered by a period of intense corporate transformation. The company is navigating a radical overhaul involving multi-billion-euro divestments, significant job cuts, and a stringent cost-saving initiative, all while attempting to pivot towards a specialized photonics future.
Financial Restructuring Takes Center Stage
Beneath the surface of anniversary commemorations, a deep portfolio restructuring is underway. In a major move, Ams Osram divested its non-optical sensor business to Infineon for 570 million euros in early February. This sold unit had generated approximately 220 million euros in revenue and 60 million euros in adjusted EBITDA for the 2025 fiscal year. This transaction follows the earlier agreement in July 2025 to sell its traditional lamp business to Ushio for 100 million euros. Combined, these sales inject a total of 670 million euros into the company, with the stated goal of reducing its net debt-to-adjusted EBITDA ratio from 3.3 to 2.5.
Concurrently, a new efficiency drive named "Simplify" has been launched. The program targets additional annual savings of 200 million euros by 2028, linked to the elimination of 2,000 positions globally. Roughly half of these job reductions are slated for Europe. German sites are particularly affected: the Regensburg semiconductor operations face a low-to-mid three-digit number of cuts, Herbrechtingen will lose around 250 jobs, and further reductions are planned in Schwabmünchen.
Showcasing Innovation at Light + Building
Against this backdrop of operational change, Ams Osram presented its technological capabilities at the Light + Building trade fair in Frankfurt from March 8th to 13th. A key highlight was the EVIYOS™ Shape technology—a high-pixel-density micro-LED chip array featuring 25,600 individually addressable pixels designed for dynamic projections in safety-critical applications. The company also unveiled an eco-friendly paper reel solution for transporting LED components, claimed to reduce the carbon footprint by 80% and be one-third lighter than previous plastic alternatives.
Recent Performance and Long-Term Ambitions
The company's latest financial results for the full year 2025 show revenue of 3.32 billion euros, representing a 3% decline. However, the adjusted EBITDA margin improved to 18.3%. Free cash flow for the period was a positive 144 million euros.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ams Osram?
Looking ahead, management anticipates first-quarter 2026 revenue of about 760 million euros with an adjusted EBITDA margin of approximately 15%. The long-term strategy sets ambitious targets for 2030: within its semiconductor business, Ams Osram aims for an adjusted EBITDA margin of at least 25%, while group-wide free cash flow is projected to exceed 200 million euros annually.
The company's current path represents a delicate balance between honoring its legacy and executing a rigorous turnaround. Although design-wins valued at over 5 billion euros point to underlying technological strength, achieving its 2030 margin goals will depend critically on the successful execution of its ongoing portfolio transformation.
