Ams Osram posts Q1 revenue of €796M, 16.5% EBITDA margin, and €37M free cash flow. AI photonics deal, new medical/bike products, and distributor award offset soft Q2 guidance.

The optics and semiconductor group has delivered first-quarter results that underscore the progress of its restructuring, even as the market continues to price in significant uncertainty. Ams Osram generated revenue of €796 million in the three months to March 2026, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of 16.5% and free cash flow of €37 million — a fragile but positive figure that management hopes to make sustainable by 2027. Shares, which have more than tripled over the past twelve months, currently trade at €22.60, roughly 13% below the 52-week high of €26.10 hit just days ago.

AI Photonics Emerges as the Strategic Pivot

The most consequential development for the company's trajectory is a development agreement with an unnamed partner in the field of AI photonics. The collaboration targets optical interconnects within data-centre clusters — the data links that shuttle information between chips powering artificial-intelligence workloads. Ams Osram aims to supplement or replace traditional copper cables with its microLED array technology, promising higher transmission speeds and lower energy consumption for ever-larger AI models. The partnership marks a decisive shift away from the conventional lighting business, though the pace at which it converts into revenue remains an open question that investors are likely to scrutinise.

New Product Lines Broaden the Base

Alongside the AI push, the company is expanding its consumer and healthcare offerings. A notable launch is a bicycle lighting system delivering up to 1,000 lumens with an integrated brake-light function, tailored for Garmin mounts — a niche but typical application of Ams Osram's LED expertise. More significant is the progress in medical sensing: a new non-invasive technology measures glycation end-products in the skin using autofluorescence, providing insights into long-term physiological stress far beyond what conventional heart-rate sensors can capture. These additions diversify the revenue mix as the group concentrates investment on its photonics core.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ams Osram?

Distributor Recognition Provides a Minor Boost

Ams Osram also received a vote of confidence from the components-distribution channel. DigiKey named the company its "2025 Titan Distributor of the Year" during the EDS Leadership Summit, one of 29 supplier awards announced on 28 May 2026. As a "Preferred Supplier" in DigiKey's catalogue, Ams Osram gains visibility across a broad portfolio that includes laser diodes, LED modules, infrared and UV emitters, and integrated circuits. While the accolade strengthens relationships at the design-in stage — where sample orders often lead to larger production runs — DigiKey disclosed no specific revenue numbers or new supply contracts. The award is therefore best viewed as a small positive for operational reach rather than a material financial catalyst.

Guidance Points to a Soft Patch Ahead

The market's attention, however, is firmly fixed on the financial outlook. For the second quarter, Ams Osram expects revenue in a range of €725 million to €825 million, with adjusted EBITDA margin of 15.5% plus or minus 1.5 percentage points. The full year 2026 is still forecast to show slightly lower revenue due to divestments and currency headwinds — the CMOS image-sensor business has already been sold — while adjusted EBITDA faces temporary pressure. The group does aim to generate free cash flow of more than €300 million for the year, including proceeds from asset sales and reduced use of factoring.

Volatility Reflects the Transition

The annualised 30-day volatility stands at over 116%, a level that mirrors the scale of the transformation under way. Ams Osram has abandoned peripheral activities and is betting its future on photonics, medical sensors, and AI infrastructure. The DigiKey award is a welcome nod from the supply chain, but the real prize will be winning a bigger role in the data centres that power tomorrow's artificial intelligence. For now, the stock's trajectory remains as unpredictable as the turnaround itself.
