Ams Osram Lands Nvidia's Seyedi and Pockets €570m from Infineon as AI Photonics Push Accelerates

The Austrian chipmaker is executing a double-barrelled strategy to reshape its future. Ams Osram has closed the sale of its non-optical sensor business to Infineon for €570 million, while simultaneously poaching a top Nvidia executive to spearhead its push into optical networking for artificial intelligence. The twin moves sent shares surging nearly 8% on Friday to €21.70, extending the year-to-date rally to a staggering 155%.
Ashkan Seyedi joins Ams Osram as Vice President of Optical Connections, a newly emphasised division. At Nvidia, he worked on co-packaged optics, a cutting-edge technology designed to boost data throughput in AI data centres. His remit at Ams Osram is to develop micro-emitter solutions for the data-communications market, a crucial piece of the company's pivot toward digital photonics. The appointment signals that management is serious about competing in the optical interconnect space, where demand is exploding alongside the AI boom.
The sensor divestiture, effective 1 July 2026, hands Infineon a portfolio of position and temperature sensors plus mixed-signal products used in automotive, industrial and medical applications. Around 230 employees will transfer with the deal. The sold unit generated roughly €230 million in annual revenue. For Ams Osram, the proceeds strengthen a balance sheet that had been weighed down by debt, and allow the firm to concentrate on higher-margin photonics — including smart glasses, where analysts see revenue potential of €50–€100 per device.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ams Osram?
Shareholders have cheered the strategic clarity. The stock closed at €21.70 on Friday, up 7.96% on the day and 14.81% for the week. The 200-day moving average of €12.19 is a distant memory — the current price sits 78% above that level. Still, the 52-week high of €26.70, reached on 26 May, remains 18.73% out of reach. The relative strength index stands at 57.6, suggesting no immediate overbought conditions, but the annualised volatility of 97.48% underscores the wild ride investors have endured.
That volatility is a double-edged sword. Over the past 30 days, the stock is still 6.06% in the red, despite Friday's sharp rebound. The current price is 11.52% above the 50-day average of €19.46. Analysts note that the market values the company at 7.5 times expected EBITDA, a reasonable multiple given the growth prospects in digital photonics — but execution risks around MicroLED technology and lingering debt remain real headwinds.
With €570 million in fresh cash and Nvidia expertise on board, Ams Osram now faces the challenge of converting these building blocks into market-ready products. The next few weeks will test whether the momentum from the deal close can hold. A cleaner balance sheet could attract more institutional interest, while the broader semiconductor sector has been buoyed by new chip launches from major US tech names. The pieces are in place; the question is how quickly they can be assembled.
