Amphenol partners with AMD, Meta, and Cisco on EBO tech to unify AI data center optical interconnects. Q1 revenue surged 58.4% to $7.62B, but stock fell 13.33% last month amid valuation concerns.

Amphenol has joined forces with AMD, Meta and Cisco to establish a unified standard for optical interconnects in artificial intelligence data centers, a move that deepens its foothold in the fastest-growing corner of the chip infrastructure market. The collaboration, centered on EBO technology, aims to eliminate bottlenecks that arise when synchronising large computing clusters — a problem that has become more acute as AI workloads demand ever-denser fiber-optic links. The initiative positions Amphenol as a full-system provider capable of making components from different manufacturers work seamlessly together, a prerequisite for the rapid scaling of global AI infrastructure.

The strategic push comes on the back of torrid financial momentum. First-quarter revenue hit $7.62 billion, a 58.4% year-on-year leap, driven primarily by connector systems for high-performance computing environments. Earnings per share reached $1.06, comfortably ahead of expectations, and management has guided for second-quarter EPS in a range of $1.14 to $1.16, signalling that the tailwind is no one-off. The communications solutions segment alone posted an 80% revenue jump, reflecting surging demand from hyperscale data centre operators.

That demand is manifesting in concrete projects. In Virginia’s Data Center Alley, initiatives such as Quantum Connect and PowerHouse Data Centers are building facilities tailored for AI loads, requiring dense fibre pathways, robust power distribution and specialised interconnect technology. Multi-billion-dollar high-performance computing campuses across the United States are reinforcing the trend, with private fibre networks and liquid cooling raising the technical bar — precisely the areas where Amphenol earns its keep with connectors, cable systems and optical solutions.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amphenol?

Yet the stock has not escaped a sharp correction. Shares closed at €107.82 on Friday, down 1.10% on the day and 13.33% over the past month, even as the 12-month gain still stands at 40.23%. The retreat reflects valuation concerns: with a price-to-earnings ratio of roughly 34, the stock trades well above the industry average. Some valuation models peg fair value at around $116, a level that suggests the market is already pricing in years of above-trend growth.

Technically, the picture remains fragile. The share price sits 7.59% below its short-term moving average and 5.35% below the longer-term line, signalling a consolidation phase rather than renewed buying pressure. Still, the average analyst price target of $176.53 stands far above the current level and even above the recent insider sale price of just under $144. Chief executive Richard Norwitt sold about 78,500 shares in early May in two tranches, a move that some investors will watch closely.

Institutional ownership remains exceptionally high at roughly 97%, but the signals from large holders are mixed. Saratoga Research & Investment Management built a new position of 4,005 shares worth about $541,000. Vanguard and State Street made only slight increases, while Capital International and Jennison Associates added more aggressively. On the other side, Hendley & Co. trimmed its stake by 18.8%, leaving it with 129,715 shares.

The quarterly dividend has been set at $0.25 per share, with the ex-dividend date on June 23 and payment scheduled for July 15. For Amphenol, the near-term tension is clear: operational strength powered by AI infrastructure is clashing with a market that wants to see the growth sustain before it re-rates the stock. If the EBO standard gains rapid adoption and accelerates capital spending by data centre operators, the company’s ambitious valuation may prove justified. If the correction deepens below the moving averages, the re-rating will remain on hold.
