Advanced Micro Devices has taken a significant strategic step to realize its ambitious artificial intelligence roadmap. The chip designer has entered a partnership with manufacturing firm Celestica to construct the essential network infrastructure for its next generation of GPUs. This move is designed to ensure the timely delivery of billions of dollars in pre-orders already placed by major technology companies.

Scaling to Meet Massive Demand

The pressure on AMD to establish a reliable hardware production pipeline is substantial. The company has already secured commitments for AI chips totaling 12 gigawatts, which includes a major agreement with Meta Platforms. To meet this projected demand, management is targeting an annual growth rate exceeding 35% in its data center business over the coming years.

The newly announced collaboration with Celestica, revealed on Monday, directly addresses this scalability challenge. It focuses on the development and production of network switches for AMD’s “Helios” architecture. This platform integrates computing power, high-speed networking, and cooling solutions for the upcoming MI450 graphics processors. The partnership’s success is now crucial; achieving ambitious revenue targets depends heavily on the Helios platform entering mass production on schedule by late 2026 and ensuring reliable delivery of ordered chips to cloud providers.

A Strategy of Open Standards

In a notable contrast to the proprietary systems favored by some competitors, AMD and Celestica are building their infrastructure on open standards. This approach is intended to offer data center operators greater flexibility in deployment and reduce the feared vendor lock-in associated with single suppliers.

The market launch for these systems is planned for the end of 2026. This timing aligns with a period when demand for training capacity for large language models is projected to reach a preliminary peak.

Shares Face Macroeconomic Headwinds

Despite these strategic advancements and a strong operational business, AMD’s stock is currently experiencing pressure. Since the start of the year, the shares have declined by approximately 10%. They closed Monday’s trading session at 170.94 euros.

This weakness is largely attributed to external macroeconomic factors. Escalating tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices have reignited market concerns about inflation. Semiconductor companies, with their complex global supply chains and traditionally higher valuations, are particularly sensitive to such geopolitical uncertainties.
