Amazon is undergoing a significant corporate transformation. Reports indicate the technology behemoth is preparing for a second substantial round of job cuts, potentially affecting approximately 14,000 additional positions. CEO Andy Jassy has framed this decisive action not primarily as a financial necessity but as a cultural "reset" aimed at combating excessive bureaucracy and enhancing overall corporate efficiency.

Investors have recently shown a measured response to the confluence of internal restructuring and broader market shifts. Amazon shares closed Friday's trading session at $231.19, registering a weekly decline of 3.32 percent. The current price sits roughly 6.6 percent below its 52-week high of $247.50.

All eyes are now on the upcoming financial report scheduled for release on February 5, 2026, which will cover the critical fourth-quarter performance. Market experts anticipate this report will not only reveal insights into the holiday sales period but, more importantly, provide concrete indications of how quickly the extensive cost-saving initiatives will translate into improved profit margins.

Streamlining Operations and Management

The planned reductions represent a historic juncture in Amazon's three-decade history. Cumulatively, these cuts could eliminate nearly 30,000 roles within the company's administrative functions, equating to almost 10 percent of its white-collar workforce. The impact is widespread, touching core divisions rather than peripheral units:

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS): The highly profitable cloud computing division.
  • Retail Operations: The company's traditional core commerce business.
  • Prime Video: The streaming service platform.
  • Human Resources: Internally referred to as People Experience and Technology.

Jassy's strategy focuses intently on management hierarchies. The period from 2017 to 2022 saw administrative staff numbers triple, a growth spurt that reportedly slowed decision-making processes. The leadership's objective appears less centered on cost savings through AI implementation and more on removing layers of management that have contributed to organizational inertia.

Concurrent European Investment Drive

Even as it streamlines its U.S. operations, Amazon is committing substantial resources to bolster its European infrastructure. Coinciding with its internal overhaul, the AWS division launched a "European Sovereign Cloud" initiative backed by an investment commitment of €7.8 billion.

This project directly addresses concerns among European clients regarding U.S. technological dominance and data privacy regulations, such as the U.S. Cloud Act. The new cloud infrastructure will be physically and logically separated from existing AWS global regions and will be operated exclusively by personnel residing within the European Union under German legal jurisdiction. The first data center is located in Brandenburg, Germany, with additional sites planned for Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal. AWS CEO Matt Garman described the venture as a "major bet" on the regulated European market.
