Amazon shares continue to scale unprecedented heights, yet a series of fundamental challenges are emerging that could test investor optimism. While the stock price charts a bullish course, operational headwinds and a significant financial write-down present a complex picture for the e-commerce and cloud giant.

Demonstrating strategic foresight, Amazon's management is proactively securing resources for its artificial intelligence infrastructure. In response to copper prices surging approximately 40% in 2025, the company has entered a two-year supply agreement with mining conglomerate Rio Tinto. The metal, sourced from Rio Tinto's Kennecott operation in Utah, will be directed toward constructing new data centers in Arizona. This move is designed to insulate Amazon Web Services (AWS) from volatile global commodity markets and potential trade disputes, ensuring a steadier supply chain for its critical cloud expansion.

CEO Sounds Alarm on Trade Policy Impact

Contrasting the market's euphoria, CEO Andy Jassy offered a cautious assessment at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He highlighted that inventory stockpiles built in 2025 as a buffer against anticipated U.S. tariffs have now been depleted. The consequence is direct: the costs of protectionist trade policies are beginning to flow through to consumer prices.

In an interview with CNBC, Jassy underscored that the retail sector traditionally operates on razor-thin margins. This leaves Amazon and its third-party sellers with little capacity to absorb cost increases of around 10% internally. These additional expenses will inevitably be passed on to customers, a dynamic that could significantly dampen demand for non-essential goods in the first half of 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

A Costly Venture into Luxury Retail

Compounding macroeconomic concerns is a substantial financial setback. Following the bankruptcy filing of luxury department store chain Saks Global, Amazon is facing a complete write-down of its $475 million investment. Court documents now describe the stake as "effectively worthless."

The tech giant alleges the retailer burned through hundreds of millions of dollars in a single year and has lodged an objection to Saks Global's restructuring plan. Although this loss does not critically threaten Amazon's overall liquidity, the impairment charge casts a shadow in a market environment that remains sensitive to negative news.

Technical Strength Obscures Underlying Risks

Despite these fundamental warnings, the equity's technical performance remains remarkably robust, seemingly dismissing the gathering risks. Closing at a record $247.50, the stock confirms its position at a 52-week high and sustains a powerful upward trend established over recent months.

The current investment thesis is defined by this divergence between technical strength and operational caution. While the chart pattern remains bullish, the reality of rising costs and consumer price sensitivity advises prudence. The key determinant for future share performance will be whether consumers accept the impending price hikes or if core business growth is genuinely hampered by trade policy.
