This strategic acquisition directly targets the most critical constraint of the ongoing AI revolution: power availability. The data centers required for training and operating advanced AI models consume electricity at a colossal scale.

This purchase grants the corporation direct access to a portfolio of renewable energy assets. Intersect Power operates solar generation and storage facilities, with plans for a significant capacity expansion by 2025—targeting 4 gigawatts of solar power and 10 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity. Projects such as "Lumina" in Texas and "Oberon" in California are intended to future-proof Google's AI ambitions, ensuring they are not hindered by insufficient power grid capacity. The transaction is anticipated to close in the first half of 2026.

Waymo Encounters Operational Hurdles

While Alphabet fortifies its cloud infrastructure, its autonomous vehicle unit, Waymo, recently faced an operational challenge. On December 26, the company temporarily suspended its service in San Francisco. The decision was prompted by a flood warning issued by the National Weather Service.

This incident marked the second service disruption within a single week. Previously, a widespread power outage had caused driverless vehicles to stall at intersections with non-functioning traffic lights. Waymo responded by deploying software updates designed to improve vehicle behavior at inoperative signals. Nevertheless, these events underscore the persistent logistical hurdles. The scalability of autonomous ride-hailing services remains heavily dependent on external variables, including weather conditions and public infrastructure reliability.
