Allianz SE is deploying its substantial capital reserves on two distinct fronts, combining aggressive shareholder returns with strategic international growth. The dual approach highlights the insurer's robust financial health as it navigates a complex economic landscape.

The company's share buyback program, launched in mid-March, has already seen over 1.1 million shares repurchased. This initiative, authorized to run until the end of 2026, represents the largest such program since 2017 with a total potential volume of up to €2.5 billion. In the week of April 7-10 alone, Allianz acquired 101,388 of its own shares. All repurchased stock is set to be retired, which will increase the earnings participation for remaining shareholders.

This capital return is underpinned by a formidable balance sheet. A Solvency II capital ratio of 218% signals a significant surplus, enabling the group to also pay a record dividend of €17.10 per share for the 2025 financial year. That payout marks an 11% increase from the prior year. Shareholders will see the stock trade ex-dividend on May 8, with the payment following on May 12.

Parallel to rewarding investors, Allianz is pursuing growth through partnerships. Its Allianz Partners division has sealed a strategic reinsurance agreement with Qatar's Al Koot Insurance, a leading health insurer in the Gulf region. Announced on April 14, 2026, the deal focuses on assistance services and specialized insurance solutions. This move exemplifies the group's strategy for the Middle East: forging alliances with established local players rather than pursuing costly organic build-outs to expand its global services network in health and assistance.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

Operational performance provides the fuel for these moves. For the 2025 financial year, Allianz posted an operating profit of €17.4 billion, an 8% year-on-year increase that landed at the top end of its target range. Net income climbed to €11.1 billion, also about 11% higher than the previous year. Management is targeting the same €17.4 billion operating result for 2026, with a tolerance band of one billion euros.

The coming weeks present key tests for this ambitious target. The Annual General Meeting in Munich on May 7 is expected to formally approve the proposed dividend. Six days later, on May 13, the group will release its first-quarter 2026 results. These figures will be scrutinized for early signs of whether it can maintain its record performance amid emerging headwinds.

Those challenges include an 11% rise in German corporate insolvencies to approximately 24,300 cases last year, as reported by its Allianz Trade credit insurance unit. Geopolitical tensions are also pressuring the transport insurance business.

Allianz at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Currently trading at €386.10, Allianz shares sit just 1.6% below their 52-week high of €392.50. The stock has gained roughly 16% since its low in June 2025 and remains 5.6% above its 200-day moving average, sustaining an upward trend that has seen it advance 12.5% over the past twelve months. The average analyst price target stands at €405, with the most optimistic forecasts reaching €504. A strong Q1 report in May could provide the momentum to challenge the stock's all-time high of €396.21.
