Storm Éowyn tore across Ireland in January 2025, leaving a trail of destruction with damages running into the hundreds of millions. While rivals Aviva, FBD, and Intact saw their underwriting profits shrink under the weight of claims, Allianz’s Irish subsidiary emerged as a standout performer. The secret? A timely hedge. By locking in reinsurance coverage before the storm hit, Allianz Ireland kept net losses manageable and posted a near-12% jump in its insurance result. Overall profit at the country’s market leader surged by a quarter.

That success is now flowing directly back to Munich. According to the latest solvency report, Allianz Ireland plans to pay an 81 million euro dividend to its parent. Since the pandemic ended, the Irish unit has funneled a total of 434 million euros to group headquarters. These steady inflows underpin the generous capital return policy that shareholders will vote on at the annual meeting on May 7.

The board is proposing a dividend of 17.10 euros per share for the past financial year — the 17th consecutive year without a cut. That payout is backed by a record operating profit of just over 17 billion euros. Alongside the dividend, a multi-billion-euro share buyback programme is already underway, with the company scooping up its own stock since mid-March. That mechanically lifts earnings per share.

But the annual meeting agenda holds more than just a payday. Executive compensation rules are being tightened. Long-term bonuses will now vest far more quickly if the Allianz share price significantly underperforms the STOXX Europe 600 Insurance index over a four-year period. Management is being tied more tightly to relative stock performance.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

Strategically, the group is also planting a flag deeper in Asia. At the end of April, Allianz signed a binding agreement with Jio Financial Services to form a joint venture for primary and health insurance in India. The move formalises a partnership first announced last summer and is designed to accelerate growth in the world’s most populous nation.

Meanwhile, the asset management arm is ploughing capital into the energy transition. Allianz Global Investors recently acquired a majority stake in a large German battery storage platform — its second direct equity investment in the sector within a few months. Such infrastructure projects offer stable, long-term returns and diversify the portfolio of premium income that the insurer must deploy.

The share price has taken a breather recently, slipping 1.48% on Wednesday to 386.10 euros. That leaves it just shy of the year-high of 394.80 euros reached in mid-April. Over the past 30 days, the stock has still gained more than 10%. The ex-dividend date falls in May.

Allianz at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Yet the year ahead is not without headwinds. Insolvencies are rising globally, and Allianz’s credit insurance arm, Allianz Trade, is in the spotlight. Germany alone has seen a double-digit increase in corporate failures. The group’s strong capital position — a Solvency II ratio of 218% — provides a cushion, but whether that is enough to support the 2026 operating profit target of around 17.4 billion euros remains to be tested. First-quarter figures are due on May 13.
