Allianz's AI Ambition Takes Shape with Strategic Pivot

Allianz leverages record 2025 profit to fund its AI transformation, with over 900 use cases and an Anthropic partnership, aiming for efficiency gains amid market caution.

The pace of digital transformation is accelerating at Munich-based insurance giant Allianz. The company is increasingly positioning itself as a technology-driven financial services provider, a shift underscored by more than 900 internal AI use cases and a key strategic partnership with AI developer Anthropic. Management is navigating the complex challenge of pursuing rapid automation while adhering to stringent regulatory requirements.

Financial Muscle Fuels Technological Shift

This large-scale strategic overhaul is being funded by exceptionally strong core business performance. For the full year 2025, the group reported a record operating profit of 17.4 billion euros, driven primarily by its robust property and casualty segment. Shareholders are set to benefit from this success through a dividend increased to 17.10 euros and a share buyback program exceeding 2.5 billion euros, commencing in March.

Market recognition of this operational strength has been mixed, however. With a closing price of 354.80 euros as of yesterday, the share has declined 8.72 percent since the start of the year, consolidating at a high level.

From Conceptual to Concrete Implementation

The group now counts over 900 registered AI application instances globally, a significant increase from the figure reported in December 2024. A cornerstone of this expansion is a contract finalized with Anthropic in January 2026. Thousands of the insurer’s developers are already utilizing the Claude Code tool for their daily tasks.

Measurable successes are emerging in operations. In Australia, an AI solution automates claims processing for power outages, while the company’s German subsidiary now settles pet insurance invoices within four hours. The overarching goal is to transition from a digital-focused approach to an "AI-first" model, thereby accelerating the translation of business requirements into technical specifications.

Leadership Realignment for a New Era

The technological realignment is mirrored in executive team changes. Following the planned departure of Klaus-Peter Röhler at the end of 2026, Tomas Kunzmann will assume leadership of the Asia-Pacific business from January 2027 with a clear mandate for AI integration. Meanwhile, the contract extension for CFO Claire-Marie Coste-Lepoutre through 2031 ensures continuity in capital allocation strategy.

Notably, management is not ignoring the potential perils of the technology. In Allianz's own 2026 Risk Barometer, Artificial Intelligence climbed to the position of the second-largest global corporate risk. In response, the company has joined the EU AI Pact, aiming to establish ethical standards early and implement close monitoring of high-risk AI systems.

The Proof Will Be in the Performance

Allianz is scheduled to present its first-quarter 2026 results on May 13. These figures are anticipated to provide concrete evidence of whether the substantial AI investments are already yielding measurable efficiency gains and contributing to an improved combined ratio in the core business. Successfully demonstrating reduced processing times while maintaining error rates would likely accelerate the rollout of automated processes to other key markets.
