The Allianz Beratungs- und Vertriebs-AG, the insurer's distribution subsidiary, is getting a new leadership structure just as a fresh industry report points to explosive growth in life insurance. Martina Panico takes over the newly created finance division, while Carolin Rudelbach assumes responsibility for operations. The appointments come after Jens Grote stepped down as board member for sales management at the end of May, and underscore a push to tighten financial steering and operational processes within the sales unit.

The timing coincides with the publication of the "Global Insurance Report 2026" from Allianz Research, which shows global life insurance premiums rose 6.9% last year to roughly €2.9 trillion. Health insurance posted its strongest premium increase since 2014, driven by ageing demographics and growing demand for private retirement and medical cover. Property and casualty insurance, by contrast, is settling after a period of sharp price adjustments, with claims inflation — long a drag on margins — beginning to ease.

While the distribution overhaul and sector tailwinds make headlines, the company’s €2.5 billion buyback programme is humming along. Since mid-March, Allianz has spent around €842 million repurchasing its own shares, snapping up more than 2.26 million shares in total. In the week of 20–22 May alone, it bought nearly 240,500 shares at an average price of €384.69, equivalent to roughly €92.5 million. The repurchased shares are being cancelled, which should lift earnings per share over time. The programme is due to run until the end of 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

The buyback rests on a solid operational foundation. First-quarter 2026 operating profit jumped 6.6% to a record €4.5 billion, with the property and casualty segment leading the charge — up 11.1% and a combined ratio of 91.0%. The group’s solvency II ratio stands at a comfortable 221%, leaving ample room for shareholder returns. For the full year, management is sticking to an operating profit target of €17.4 billion.

At the same time, Allianz is pushing ahead with artificial intelligence. A newly forged global partnership with US firm Anthropic will integrate the Claude family of models into the group’s internal AI platform, making them accessible to employees worldwide.

Despite all this activity, the share price has struggled to keep pace. The stock changed hands at €375.60 on the day of the latest data, down 1.55% on the week and 3.37% since the start of the year. That leaves it roughly 5% below its 52-week high of €394.80, set on 21 April. The relative strength index stands near 74, suggesting a technically overbought condition.

Analyst opinion remains split. Of ten surveyed experts, only two rate the stock a buy, five a hold, and three a sell. The average price target of €395.30 implies a modest 3.6% upside, but the range is wide: Berenberg’s €504 call stands in stark contrast to Jefferies at €325 and Barclays at €350. With the next major catalyst — second-quarter results — due on 7 August, investors will be watching the weekly buyback updates for clues on how fast the group can push past the €1 billion mark in repurchased capital.
