Aixtron shares swing wildly after a 31% monthly slide, with mwb upgrading to Hold and JPMorgan eyeing €70, as investors await H1 results on July 30.

The whipsaw action in Aixtron shares this week captures the jittery mood gripping the semiconductor sector. After a dizzying 31% slide over the past month, the German chip-equipment maker saw its stock spike nearly 7% on Tuesday only to give back those gains the following session — a pattern that has become all too familiar for investors.

At Wednesday's close, Aixtron traded at €41.67, down 1.47% on the day but still clinging to a weekly gain of 4.44%. The stock has now shed roughly a quarter of its value over 30 days and sits about 34% below its 52-week high of €62.68 reached in mid-June. Yet the longer view tells a different story: the shares remain up around 141% year-to-date and have more than doubled over the past twelve months.

The violent swings have caught the attention of analysts. mwb research has upgraded Aixtron from "Sell" to "Hold," arguing that the worst of the sell-off is behind it. The brokerage pointed to the stock's dip below €40 last week as the catalyst — a level that, in its view, eliminated the valuation asymmetry that had previously justified a negative rating. The price target stays at €40, roughly in line with current levels.

"The fundamental drivers remain intact," mwb noted, citing Aixtron's dominant position in AI optoelectronics and gallium-nitride technology. The firm expects order intake to exceed €200 million in the second quarter.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

Technical indicators suggest the selling pressure may be easing. The relative strength index has recovered to 40.4 from deeply oversold territory, though it signals no clear directional bias. The annualised 30-day volatility, however, remains elevated at over 80%, underscoring just how reactive the stock is to any news flow from the chip sector.

Wall Street remains deeply divided on Aixtron's fair value. Barclays sees the stock fairly priced at €39, while JPMorgan maintains an "Overweight" rating with a €70 target — a gap of nearly €30 that reflects sharply contrasting views on the company's prospects. JPMorgan's optimism hinges on rising demand for MOCVD systems used in AI applications.

The broader sell-off that preceded this week's tentative stabilisation had multiple triggers. Skepticism about AI valuations, rising oil prices tied to US-Iran tensions, and a rotation out of technology names all weighed on the sector. Aixtron, along with peers like Infineon, initially caught a tailwind from a recovery in Asian chip stocks, led by Samsung and SK Hynix, before momentum faded.

Aixtron at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Institutional interest remains notable. UBS Group reported a 3.15% voting rights stake in Aixtron as of May 1, 2026.

All eyes now turn to July 30, when Aixtron releases its first-half results. The market will be watching closely to see whether the company can confirm its full-year revenue guidance of around €560 million, with a fluctuation band of €30 million, and an EBIT margin between 17% and 20%. The €200 million-plus order intake forecast for the second quarter will also face scrutiny, as will the pace at which the company converts its backlog into revenue. Infineon follows with its own numbers on August 5.
