Aixtron's Record Rally Takes a Breather: Profit-Taking and Dividend Effect Weigh After AGM

Aixtron shares fell 5.67% on Friday, retreating from a record high as profit-taking and the dividend ex-date cooled a 161% year-to-date rally, while macro risks loom.

The Aixtron share price skidded 5.67% to €51.26 on Friday, pulling back from a fresh all-time high just a day earlier as a combination of technical factors and profit-taking cooled a blistering rally. The setback, however, looks more like a natural consolidation than a shift in sentiment, with the stock still showing a year-to-date gain of 161.86% after the close — down from the 177.60% it had notched on Thursday.

The pullback came after the stock hit €54.34 on Thursday, a level that capped a month-long surge of 28.31% that had taken the shares from around €42. That rally was fueled by a wave of optimism around artificial intelligence and semiconductor equipment demand, with peers such as Infineon, ASML and STMicroelectronics also climbing on strong US tech leads.

Friday's decline was amplified by the dividend ex-date. Aixtron's annual general meeting in Aachen on Wednesday approved a payout of €0.15 per share for fiscal 2025, and shares began trading ex-dividend on Thursday. The mechanical adjustment of around €0.15 would account for a fraction of the drop, but the bulk came from investors locking in profits after a run that pushed the stock 30.12% above its 50-day moving average — a level that often invites a pullback.

The AGM itself was a smooth affair, with 46.6% of voting capital represented and all management proposals passed by wide margins. CEO Felix Grawert used the platform to underscore the strength of the company's balance sheet and its commitment to investing in core technologies for power electronics and optoelectronics. The latter segment is expected to remain the primary growth engine, with Aixtron targeting revenues of around €560 million in 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

On profitability, management laid out a clear framework: an EBIT margin between 17% and 20%, with a gross margin of approximately 42%. Those targets hinge on sustained customer orders for deposition equipment used in AI-related chipmaking and GaN-based power devices. The narrative remains tightly linked to investment cycles in the semiconductor industry, where capacity expansions for high-performance computing and energy-efficient components are driving demand.

The macro backdrop, however, injected a note of caution on Friday. Rising oil prices and escalating tensions in the Middle East dented risk appetite, with the DAX indicated 1.2% lower at around 24,173 points. For export-oriented technology stocks, geopolitical uncertainty and the ongoing US-China trade dialogue add layers of risk that can delay investment decisions and weigh on valuations.

The technical picture adds another dimension. After such a powerful run, the relative strength index sits at 42.3 — not overbought, but the annualized volatility of 90.5% underscores how quickly sentiment can shift. Small catalyst changes can trigger outsized moves when a stock has risen more than 160% in a single year.

Aixtron at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The next concrete checkpoint for investors is the half-year financial report on July 30, 2026. Until then, the market will be weighing whether Aixtron can substantiate its upgraded guidance with order trends and margin quality, while the broader tech narrative from the US — where the S&P 500 broke above 7,500 points and Applied Materials issued a confident outlook — continues to provide a supportive tailwind. For now, the pullback looks like a pause rather than a reversal, but the higher the stock climbs, the more sensitive it becomes to any stumble.
