Aixtron's Post-AGM Dip: Profit-Taking and Cautious Sector Tone Overshadow Strong Order Shift
16.05.2026 - 15:23:16 | boerse-global.de
Aixtron's shares ended the week on the back foot, giving back some of the spectacular gains accumulated since the start of the year. The stock closed at €52.00 on Friday, shedding 4.31% from the previous session, shortly after touching a fresh 52-week high of €54.34 on May 14. Despite the pullback, the chip-equipment specialist has still surged 165.64% in 2025 and a staggering 293.05% over the past twelve months — numbers that inevitably invite profit-taking.
The immediate trigger for Friday's weakness came from across the Atlantic. Applied Materials, a bellwether for the semiconductor equipment industry, reported second-quarter revenue of $7.91 billion, up 11.4% year-on-year, alongside a healthy profit increase. Yet the market's reaction was subdued. In an environment where even strong results fail to lift sector names, European equipment makers feel the chill. For Aixtron, a stock already stretched by a relentless rally, investors grew wary of how much good news is already priced in.
The company's annual general meeting in Aachen on Friday did little to alter the mood. With 46.6% of voting capital represented, shareholders approved all management proposals, including a dividend of €0.15 per share for the 2025 financial year. The executive and supervisory boards were also granted discharge. But a modest payout does little to move the needle for a technology stock that has more than doubled this year. The real drivers remain order trends and capacity expansion plans in the chip industry.
Analysts are deeply divided on the stock's fair value — a reflection of the uncertainty that comes after such a strong run. Jefferies sees further upside with a €55.30 target, pointing to Aixtron's Malaysia expansion and opportunities in optoelectronics. JPMorgan is close behind at €54.50, while UBS sits at €50.00, near the current price. On the more cautious side, Deutsche Bank targets €43.00, Barclays €39.00, and Warburg Research just €23.50. This wide range shows that while the market acknowledges Aixtron's growth story, there is heated debate over how much of it is already in the share price.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?
Fundamentally, the picture is mixed. First-quarter revenue came in at roughly €59 million, well below the prior-year level. But the order intake was a bright spot, reaching €171 million. More importantly, the mix shifted dramatically toward optoelectronics, which accounted for 52% of equipment orders, up from about 10% a year earlier. That pivot supports Aixtron's upgraded full-year guidance. For 2026, management is targeting revenue of around €560 million and an EBIT margin of 17–20% — ambitious targets that depend on converting the order book into deliveries.
The order backlog now stands at roughly €359 million, giving some visibility into coming quarters. The conversion pace will be the key variable. If projects roll out smoothly, the earnings momentum gains substance; any delays could reignite concerns about valuation.
Technically, the stock appears overextended. The distance to the 200-day moving average is 128.55%, and the 30-day annualised volatility sits at 92.01%. The relative strength index of 42.3 suggests the retreat has not yet reached oversold territory, leaving room for further consolidation. With such high volatility, even positive company news may struggle to attract fresh buyers at current levels.
Aixtron at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The next major test comes in July, when Aixtron reports first-half results. Investors will focus on order trends and the pace at which the record backlog translates into revenue. A second-quarter update in October will provide another read on the sustainability of the optoelectronics boom. Until then, the stock's direction will likely be set by sentiment in the broader chip cycle rather than any single corporate event.
