Aixtron’s Order-to-Revenue Gap Takes Centre Stage as Shares Tumble 37% From Record

Aixtron shares have fallen sharply despite a 127% YTD gain, as investors focus on the slow conversion of a record AI-driven order backlog into actual revenue and margins ahead of key half-year results.

The disconnect between Aixtron’s swelling order book and its still-modest revenue has become the defining issue for investors, who have watched the stock shed 37% of its value since hitting a record high of €62.68 on 18 June. At Friday’s close of €39.43, the shares are now trading at levels last seen before the latest AI-driven rally took hold, and the entire semiconductor sector is under pressure from rising rate jitters.

The correction marks a sharp reversal for one of the best-performing chip stocks this year. Aixtron remains up 127.85% year-to-date and 136.53% over the past twelve months, a rally that was largely built on expectations around equipment spending for artificial intelligence data centres. Those gains have been trimmed as investors lock in profits and reassess the pace at which order intake is translating into actual revenue and margins.

In the first quarter, Aixtron booked just €59 million in revenue, well below the year-ago level, as seasonal softness and a downturn in the power electronics segment weighed on results. Yet the order intake surged roughly 30% to about €171 million, with more than 65% of that coming from optoelectronics equipment used in AI data centres to produce laser chips for optical interconnects. The company raised its full-year guidance in April on the back of that strength, and management expects second-quarter revenue of roughly €110 million — a near doubling from Q1.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

That target will be scrutinised when Aixtron publishes its half-year report on 30 July. A strong result would help validate the current narrative that the company is successfully converting its record backlog into top-line growth. A miss, however, could amplify doubts about the pace of delivery and deepen the stock’s slide.

Profitability is another key variable. Aixtron has set a full-year EBIT margin target of 17% to 20%, which would represent a sharp improvement from the negative margin recorded in the first quarter. Investors will watch closely for any update on whether that trajectory remains intact, especially as input costs and product mix evolve.

On the technical side, the 14-day relative strength index of 34.1 points to oversold conditions, and the stock is trading 24.4% below its 50-day moving average of €52.16. Still, it remains comfortably above the 200-day average of €31.51, suggesting that the long-term trend has not yet been broken despite the recent volatility. The annualised volatility of 78.58% underscores how sensitive the shares are to sector and company-specific news flow.

The mid-year update will act as a catalyst that could either stabilise sentiment or intensify the pressure. Aixtron enters the test with a full order book and clear demand drivers, but the market now needs evidence that those strong signals are being converted into revenue and margins at a pace that justifies the stock’s still-heightened valuation.
