Aixtron shares staged a sharp rebound on Tuesday, climbing 5.07% to €41.00, as the semiconductor equipment maker clawed back some ground after a brutal sell-off that sliced more than a third off its value from a June peak. The bounce comes just days before the company is due to report half-year results on July 30, with investors keen to see whether a surge in order intake can translate into real earnings growth.

The order pipeline looks strong enough on the surface. Bank of America expects second-quarter bookings of around €189 million, representing a 10% sequential increase and a near-50% jump year-on-year, driven by widening demand for optical components used in data-transmission lasers. The more bullish estimate from mwb research puts the figure above €200 million. Aixtron commands an estimated 90% market share in the AI optoelectronics and HVDC (high-voltage direct current) segment, where annual revenue potential is seen at between €340 million and €610 million. Gallium nitride (GaN) is flagged as a further growth driver, while silicon carbide (SiC) is not expected to contribute meaningfully until late 2027 or early 2028.

Opinion among analysts remains sharply divided. Jefferies recently raised its price target from €55.30 to €73, seeing further upside even after the rally, while JPMorgan maintains its "Overweight" rating with a €70 target. At the other end of the spectrum, Barclays sticks to €39 and Morgan Stanley is even more cautious at €35. The average target across nine analysts stands at €51, with no outright sell recommendations but seven "hold" ratings and only two "buy" calls. Mwb research upgraded Aixtron from "Sell" to "Hold" on July 20, keeping its target at €40, and cited profit-taking and a re-rating of AI sentiment as reasons for the recent slide, while noting that the company's fundamental position remains intact.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

Institutional interest is also rising. Goldman Sachs Group disclosed on July 10 that it now holds 8.69% of Aixtron's voting rights, up from 8.28%, with 3.34% in shares and the rest via instruments. The move adds weight to the view that large investors see value in the stock despite the recent volatility.

The real test, however, lies in Aixtron's ability to convert bulging order books into revenue and operating profit. After posting a loss in the first quarter, the company is targeting an EBIT margin of 17%–20% for the full year – an ambitious goal for a business that has only just returned to positive territory. Until those margins materialise, the stock's elevated valuation remains vulnerable. Technical indicators underscore the jitters: the 14-day relative strength index sits at 38.5, suggesting oversold conditions, while the 30-day annualised volatility has surged to 80%, reflecting the wild swings of recent weeks.

All eyes now turn to July 30. If the upcoming numbers confirm that orders are translating into earnings momentum, Aixtron could regain its footing. If not, the wide gap between its most bullish and most bearish analyst targets – a chasm of nearly €40 – may widen further.
