Airbus shares, trading near €161, find themselves caught between a landmark achievement in space and a deepening crisis in its core commercial aircraft business. The successful splashdown of NASA's Orion spacecraft, powered by Airbus's European Service Module, stands in stark contrast to the company's struggle to deliver jets on the ground.

The company's first-quarter delivery figures have intensified investor concerns. Airbus handed over just 114 commercial aircraft between January and March, a 16% drop from the same period last year. This slow start places its official annual target of 870 deliveries in serious doubt. To hit that number now, the planemaker would need to deliver approximately 741 planes over the remaining nine months—a pace analysts at mwb Research call "increasingly challenging."

Persistent Supply Chain Bottlenecks

The delivery shortfall is driven by two persistent issues: quality problems with fuselage panels and ongoing engine shortages, primarily from Pratt & Whitney. With P&W engines powering roughly 40% of the global A320 fleet, this bottleneck carries significant weight. Airbus has initiated legal proceedings against the supplier, seeking damages for late deliveries, a dispute that may head to arbitration.

These constraints have forced a strategic retreat on production goals. Airbus has lowered its monthly target for narrowbody aircraft to 70-75 units until the end of 2027, scaling back from an original plan to reach 75 per month by 2027. The overall order book remains robust at 25,908 aircraft as of late March, supported by strong demand from the Asia-Pacific region and North America, but converting these orders into revenue is the pressing challenge.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Airbus?

A Critical Week for Guidance

All eyes are now on a series of key events. The Annual General Meeting in Amsterdam on April 14 is expected to approve a gross dividend of €3.20 per share for the 2025 financial year, payable on April 23. More critically, management will likely face intense questioning on its production roadmap. This precedes the first-quarter earnings call on April 28, where CEO Guillaume Faury is expected to address the delivery target directly. mwb Research anticipates a formal reduction of the goal at that presentation and has already trimmed its own 2026 estimate to 840 aircraft, lowering its price target slightly to €170.

Analyst sentiment reflects the uncertainty. While Citigroup upgraded the stock to "Buy" in early March, Rothschild & Co Redburn downgraded it to "Hold" in late February, and Zacks Research moved to a "Strong Sell" rating by the end of March. The share price has shed more than 11% over the past four weeks.

A Bright Spot in Bremen

Amid the commercial aviation turmoil, the company's defence and space division offers a rare beacon of long-term visibility. The flawless performance of the Airbus-built European Service Module on the Artemis II lunar mission—providing propulsion, power, and life support for the ten-day flight—was a major success. The module even demonstrated crucial radiation shielding capabilities required for future moon landings.

Airbus at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Airbus has already delivered the modules for the Artemis III and IV missions to the Kennedy Space Center, with units for Artemis V and VI currently in production in Bremen for delivery in 2027 and 2028, respectively. The division booked a record €17.7 billion in orders last year, securing a steady revenue stream far into the future.

The coming days will determine whether the narrative around Airbus stock is defined by its celestial ambitions or its earthly production constraints. The earnings call later this month may force a choice between maintaining an optimistic target or bowing to operational reality.
