The Canadian junior explorer, which saw its stock rocket 355% in early May only to trigger an inquiry from the country's market watchdog CIRO, is about to put its geological thesis to the test. The company plans to launch field work on its Church lithium project in northwestern Ontario by the end of May, armed with fresh funding and a revamped exploration strategy.

The C$400,000 non-brokered flow-through private placement closed in April provides the financial runway. Investors subscribed at C$0.25 per share, a price that now looks distant given the subsequent volatility. The proceeds are earmarked for Canadian exploration expenditures on critical minerals, a structure that allows junior miners to raise early-stage capital efficiently. With the money in hand, the company is shifting from speculation to operation.

Stock Seesaw Catches Regulator's Eye

The CIRO inquiry on May 8 came after Highland shares staged an explosive rally without any corresponding operational news. Management told the regulator it was unaware of any material change that could explain the move. Since then, the stock has settled around C$0.46, though that level still represents a fraction of the C$5.82 peak reached on November 12, 2025. At the most recent close of C$0.22, the shares traded well below their 200-day moving average, underperforming the broader TSX 300 Composite Index over the past six months. The low of C$0.13 on April 28 underscores the extremes of this junior's journey.

Church Project Gets a Makeover

The upcoming program on Church marks a strategic pivot. An initial soil sampling campaign failed to deliver significant lithium anomalies, forcing the company to rethink its approach. Over the 5,500-hectare property, Highland will deploy high-resolution LiDAR and radiometric geophysical surveys, supplemented by targeted sampling. The geological setting remains prospective for lithium, cesium, and tantalum — commodities that fit squarely into the critical minerals narrative. Work is weather-dependent but expected to start by late May.

On the corporate side, Highland streamlined its portfolio late last year. In December, it spun out its gold assets into Highland Red Lake Gold Corp., reducing its own stake from roughly 73% to 17%. That move sharpened the focus on Church and the Sy gold project in Nunavut, leaving Highland as a pure-play critical minerals explorer with a legacy gold position.

Sy Gold: Historical Buzz Needs Modern Validation

The Sy project in the Kivalliq region covers 3,345 hectares within the Yathkyed Lake Greenstone Belt, a less-explored arch that hosts known deposits such as Meadowbank and Meliadine. Historical surface samples returned values as high as 39 grams of gold per tonne. But those numbers come from a technical report dated 2007 that no longer meets NI 43-101 standards. There are no current mineral reserves or resource estimates. Highland’s job is to confirm those old signals with modern field techniques — a challenge given the remote location far from existing infrastructure.

Government Tailwind Adds Macro Context

The broader environment for junior explorers in Canada has improved. Ottawa’s multi-billion-dollar fund for strategic mining and infrastructure projects, running from 2026 to 2030, is designed to support assets targeting long-term demand for critical minerals. That policy backdrop lends credibility to Highland’s focus on Church, even as the company’s near-term performance will hinge on what the geophysics and sampling reveal.

The market’s next catalyst is official confirmation that the summer program has begun. Once field teams mobilize on Church, Highland will deliver its first concrete operational news since April’s financing. For a stock that has swung from speculative frenzy to regulatory scrutiny and back, hard data from the ground is the only thing that can anchor its valuation.
