AeroVironment Shares Signal Potential Rebound Following Steep Decline

After enduring a prolonged period of selling pressure, shares of the American defense contractor AeroVironment are showing tentative signs of stabilization. A combination of fresh military contracts and a revised outlook from Wall Street analysts is injecting cautious optimism into the investment case for the drone specialist.

Analyst Sentiment Shifts Amid Lower Valuation

A key development supporting the recent share price movement was an upgrade from the research firm Raymond James. On Monday, the firm adjusted its rating on AeroVironment from "Underperform" to "Market Perform." Analysts cited the stock's significantly compressed valuation following a sharp decline as the primary reason for the change.

Over a 30-day period, the equity lost nearly 20 percent of its value, pushing its Relative Strength Index (RSI) into oversold territory at a reading of 22.5. This correction lowered the company's forward EBITDA multiple from 34 to 28. According to Raymond James, this adjustment has brought the risk-reward profile into a more balanced state, aligning it closer with historical industry averages.

Pentagon Contract Provides Substantial Catalyst

The shift in analyst perspective coincides with significant new business from the U.S. Department of Defense. AeroVironment secured a substantial $117 million contract with the U.S. Army for the delivery of its P550 reconnaissance drones, systems considered vital for modern tactical military operations. The company also obtained a separate, smaller order for its Red Dragon combat drones.

Market observers at William Blair view these contracts as strategically important. Their analysis suggests the Pentagon is poised to invest over one billion dollars in reconnaissance systems throughout the coming decade, positioning AeroVironment as an established supplier to benefit from this long-term budgetary trend.

Operational Challenges Persist Despite Progress

While the new contracts and valuation reset are positive developments, the company continues to navigate several operational hurdles. Quarterly results released in early March presented a mixed picture: although revenue surged 143 percent year-over-year, both the top-line figure and earnings per share fell short of elevated market expectations.

Analysts have also pointed to integration delays with the acquired BlueHalo business unit. The transition from development to full-scale production is progressing more slowly than initially anticipated. Furthermore, AeroVironment's funded backlog has recently stagnated at approximately $1.1 billion.

For the ongoing fiscal year 2026, management has reaffirmed its earnings per share guidance, projecting a range of $2.75 to $3.10. A majority of Wall Street experts maintain a constructive view despite the competitive landscape and operational headwinds. Approximately 84 percent of covering analysts continue to recommend the stock as a "Buy," with average price targets clustering between $312 and $318.
