In a statement released today, AeroVironment confirmed it received the contract to supply its Switchblade® 600 Block 2 and Switchblade® 300 Block 20 loitering munition systems. This procurement is particularly significant as it marks the first order placed by the U.S. Army for these next-generation versions of the Switchblade family.

The award falls under a pre-existing, five-year Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) framework contract for "Lethal Unmanned Systems." Such IDIQ agreements allow the government to issue specific delivery orders for supplies or services as needed over the contract period.

Enhanced Capabilities for Hardened Targets

A key technical development included in this contract is the first procurement of a warhead featuring an Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP). This warhead type is specifically designed to engage and defeat armored vehicles, signaling an evolution in the systems' intended use. The upgrade moves the platforms beyond reconnaissance and light-target roles into more challenging combat scenarios against hardened targets.

The company detailed several enhancements for the newly ordered blocks. The Switchblade 600 Block 2, co-developed with the United States Special Operations Command, incorporates improved avionics and Automatic Target Recognition technology. The man-portable Switchblade 300 Block 20 focuses on modular payloads, sensor upgrades, and options for extended operational range.
