The defense technology firm AeroVironment is embarking on a significant expansion of its manufacturing footprint, driven by robust demand for its unmanned systems. A substantial new contract from the U.S. Army has catalyzed major infrastructure investments, setting the stage for the company to broaden its reach beyond its traditional defense customer base into international and commercial sectors.

Record Backlog Fuels Infrastructure Push

AeroVironment’s growth trajectory is being powered by a record-high order backlog, which recently reached $1.1 billion. A key component of this backlog is a $186 million order from the U.S. Army for Switchblade loitering munitions, part of a broader five-year framework agreement with a potential total value approaching $1 billion. To fulfill these and other contracts, the company is executing a multi-faceted capacity expansion.

Significant investments are being channeled into its facilities in Albuquerque, where over $30 million will fund the creation of approximately 450 high-wage jobs. This project is receiving support from local authorities in the form of performance-based incentives totaling $6 million. Concurrently, AeroVironment is scaling up production output at its site in Salt Lake City.

Strategic Shift Towards Diversification

Historically, AeroVironment’s revenue has been heavily concentrated with the U.S. Department of Defense, which accounted for 87% of sales in the first nine months of the current fiscal year. International business contributed the remaining 13%. Management is now actively pursuing a diversification strategy to alter this mix.

The company is evaluating the establishment of local resources and potential manufacturing sites overseas. Furthermore, it is targeting civilian applications for its technology. Autonomous systems and counter-drone platforms are being developed to protect critical civilian infrastructure, such as large utility grids, opening a new avenue for growth.

Ramping Defensive and Offensive Capabilities

While known for its precision strike assets, AeroVironment is also dramatically increasing output of defensive systems. Production capacity for its Titan counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) is slated to quadruple by 2026. Ambitious long-term plans envision a tenfold increase from current volumes by the year 2030.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AeroVironment?

To manage the increasing complexity across its expanding network of production centers, the company is overhauling its internal processes. This involves adopting a more commercially-oriented operational model and implementing new enterprise software systems.

Financial and Operational Context

This operational build-out coincides with a pivotal structural shift for AeroVironment, moving from localized testing phases into high-volume production. The global modernization of military forces continues to generate sustained demand for proven autonomous platforms, providing a favorable market tailwind.

The company’s shares reflected recent operational strength, advancing nearly eight percent on a weekly basis to close at €193.25 on Tuesday. Despite this gain, the equity remains down approximately eleven percent since the start of the calendar year.

By accelerating its capacity expansion, AeroVironment is laying the physical groundwork required to execute large-volume government contracts, both domestically and abroad, positioning itself for the next phase of its evolution.
