AeroVironment secures a key US Army contract for the Switchblade 400 loitering munition, yet shares near 52-week lows. Analysts remain bullish as retail interest surges.

A curious disconnect is playing out at AeroVironment. The defence contractor has just secured a major prototype deal with the US Army, yet its shares are trading barely above a 52-week trough, down nearly 60% from the October peak. The market’s scepticism is colliding head-on with a stream of bullish strategic developments.

Switchblade 400: Filling a Tactical Gap

The centrepiece of the recent news flow is a contract under the US Army’s LASSO programme — Low-Altitude Stalking and Strike Ordnance. AeroVironment will develop the Switchblade 400, a man-portable loitering munition designed to take out armoured targets. Weighing in at roughly 18 kilograms, the medium-range drone can fly 65 kilometres and loiter over a target area for 35 minutes.

What sets this platform apart is its autonomy. The company’s proprietary AV_Halo software enables automated target recognition, linking sensors directly to the operator. Crucially, the system can function independently even in contested environments where enemy electronic warfare jams standard communications.

The contract sits within a broader procurement push. For fiscal 2027, the Army has requested a budget of around $110 million for the LASSO initiative, which aims to close gaps in infantry brigade anti-armour capabilities. This latest award follows a separate $186 million order earlier this year for other Switchblade variants, drawn from an existing framework agreement with a total ceiling of nearly $1 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AeroVironment?

Leadership Change and Product Expansion

In a move to strengthen operational execution, AeroVironment appointed Sean T. Woodward as chief financial officer in May 2026. The company is scaling up production and supply chains to meet rising demand for unmanned systems, and the new CFO is expected to play a key role in that effort.

Beyond the Switchblade family, the firm recently unveiled Halo_Shield, a modular counter-drone system designed to intercept hostile unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles. The product broadens AeroVironment’s exposure to the Pentagon’s growing budget for unmanned systems and countermeasures.

Analysts Stand Firm as Shares Slide

Despite the stock’s dramatic pullback — it has shed more than 34% since the start of the year and sits roughly 38% below its 200-day moving average — Wall Street remains broadly bullish. Clear Street reaffirmed a buy rating in early May with a price target of $293, even as the shares had already fallen around 49% over the preceding six months. The consensus among analysts is a “Strong Buy”, underpinned by expectations of revenue growth in the current fiscal year.

The bull case rests on AeroVironment’s entrenched position in loitering munitions and what analysts see as an attractive valuation for long-term investors. The market capitalisation currently stands at roughly $9.4 billion.

AeroVironment at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Retail Traders Pile In

A striking development has been the surge in retail interest. On social trading platforms, message volumes around AeroVironment rocketed roughly 800% within 24 hours. Whether this reflects genuine conviction in the defence narrative or short-term speculation remains unclear.

Institutional investors, however, continue to hold more than 86% of the shares — a sign that the big money has not lost faith. The next test for the investment thesis will come with further LASSO programme announcements and quarterly earnings, which must demonstrate that the demand for Switchblade systems is translating into hard revenue.
