Despite reporting a solid quarterly performance, Adobe Inc. is witnessing a growing wave of analyst downgrades. The latest move came from William Blair, which adjusted its rating on the stock to "Market Perform" this Thursday. This action targets a share price that is already trading near multi-year lows.

Structural Doubts Overshadow Valuation

The stock is currently hovering close to its 52-week low. It trades at a price-to-earnings multiple of approximately 13, a significant discount compared to the industry average of nearly 28 and a peer group median of almost 48. This valuation gap points not to an immediate financial crisis but to deeper, structural concerns about Adobe's future competitive position.

Arjun Bhatia, an analyst at William Blair, identifies the core issue: while current financials are stable, the long-term defense of Adobe's competitive moat is in question. He acknowledges the stock appears inexpensive, valued at just nine times free cash flow. Nevertheless, he anticipates a period of sideways trading until clarity emerges on several fronts, including pricing power, the monetization of AI tools, and the evolving role of professional creatives.

Competitive Landscape Intensifies

The pressure on Adobe's flagship Creative Cloud franchise, which still generates annual revenue of $19 billion, is mounting from multiple directions. Rivals like Canva are growing toward a $4 billion revenue base, while Figma has reached $1.2 billion. Furthermore, AI-powered tools from tech giants such as Google and Apple are adding to the market disruption. For its fiscal year 2026, Adobe is targeting recurring revenue growth exceeding 10%, though this is expected to come alongside declining operating margins, projected to fall to 45%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Adobe?

A Chorus of Downgrades

William Blair is not alone in its cautious stance. On March 16, Argus Research reduced its rating on Adobe to "Hold." Goldman Sachs cut its price target from $290 to $220. Adjustments from other firms followed: Citigroup and Piper Sandler lowered their targets to $278 and $280, respectively. Deutsche Bank and UBS also reduced their targets to $310 and $290, with both institutions citing uncertainties related to the ongoing CEO transition.

Regulatory Scrutiny Adds to Headwinds

Compounding these challenges is increased regulatory attention. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into Adobe's early termination fees. The probe focuses on whether the company's practice of charging 50% of the remaining contract value for early cancellation of an annual subscription violates British consumer protection law. A potential breach could result in a fine of up to 10% of Adobe's global revenue. The investigation is expected to last at least six months.

This UK inquiry comes shortly after Adobe reached a $150 million settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice, which had raised similar allegations regarding the company's subscription practices.

Adobe at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The Path Forward Remains Unclear

The central question for investors is whether Adobe can successfully monetize the AI opportunity through its Firefly ecosystem before competitors gain substantial ground. With the CEO succession process unresolved, the CMA investigation ongoing, and the AI monetization strategy still taking shape, the stock may struggle to stage a sustained recovery in the near term.
