While the sportswear sector grapples with weak consumer spending and new US tariffs, Adidas is sending a powerful signal of internal confidence. Senior management and a major shareholder have recently made significant personal investments in the company, betting millions that the current headwinds are a temporary obstacle rather than a permanent drag.

This vote of confidence comes at a critical juncture. The company’s own guidance for 2026, projecting an operating profit of 2.3 billion euros, recently disappointed the market. CFO Harm Ohlmeyer quantified the dual pressure from US import tariffs and an unfavorable dollar exchange rate at 400 million euros. Without these factors, a 10% EBIT margin target would have been achievable by 2026; that goal is now pushed to 2027/2028.

The market’s reaction to this guidance was initially negative, but it created a buying opportunity for key insiders. In late March, the investment vehicle of major shareholder Nassef Sawiris acquired shares worth approximately 11 million euros in an off-market transaction. The company’s finance chief also increased his stake. This backing helped fuel a sharp rebound, with the stock recently posting a single-day gain of 6.97% to 139.70 euros.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Adidas?

Operationally, Adidas is demonstrating resilience where it can. Its direct-to-consumer business is growing at a double-digit pace through e-commerce, supported by a strong lifestyle trend centered on its Samba and Gazelle sneakers. A better product mix and disciplined full-price execution are steadily improving gross margins. This foundation allows the board to propose a 40% dividend increase to 2.80 euros per share at the Annual General Meeting on May 7, complemented by an ongoing share buyback program of up to one billion euros.

A significant near-term challenge remains structurally anchored in Vietnam, which manufactures about 40% of Adidas footwear and is now subject to a 20% US tariff. CEO Björn Gulden has indicated the company plans price increases in the high single-digit percentage range but prefers not to be the first mover. Adidas has joined rival Nike in petitioning the US President for an industry-wide exemption, as shifting such specialized performance footwear production quickly is seen as unrealistic.

Beyond financials, a major commercial catalyst is on the horizon. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, for which Adidas outfits teams including Argentina and Spain, is expected to provide a significant sales boost. Particular attention is on the new German national team away jersey, which the company says has already surpassed demand for the recent European Championship kit. As the decades-long partnership with the German Football Association concludes, this final collaborative World Cup jersey carries added emotional weight for fans.

Analysts are largely looking past the short-term margin concerns. A clear majority of surveyed experts maintain a buy recommendation on the stock, with an average price target around 198 euros. The immediate test of this optimism arrives on April 29 with the release of first-quarter results. This report will provide the first concrete data on how severely the new tariffs are impacting current margins and will show whether the stock’s relative strength against a struggling Nike is more than a fleeting market reaction. For Adidas, solid quarterly numbers are the essential prerequisite to credibly underpin its medium-term goal of delivering annual operating profit growth in the mid-teens through 2028.
