Despite posting record-breaking annual results, Adidas saw its stock price plunge to a three-year low as investors focused on a disappointing profit forecast for the coming year.

Record 2025 Performance Overshadowed

The sportswear giant, headquartered in Herzogenaurach, reported its strongest financial year ever for 2025. Revenue reached a historic high of €24.8 billion, representing a currency-adjusted increase of 13 percent. Operational profit surged by 54 percent to €2.06 billion, while net income jumped an impressive 75 percent to €1.34 billion. Ordinarily, such figures would be expected to drive share price appreciation.

The market’s negative reaction was triggered by the company's outlook for 2026. Management projected an operational profit of approximately €2.3 billion for the current fiscal year. This figure fell roughly 15 percent short of the analyst consensus estimate of €2.72 billion. The announcement prompted an immediate sell-off, with the equity dropping as much as eight percent in a single session. The stock has failed to recover and now trades approximately 39 percent below its 52-week high of €226.70.

Structural Headwinds from Tariffs and Currency

The cautious guidance points to underlying structural challenges. A significant portion of Adidas products are manufactured in Asia and imported into key Western markets, a supply chain that is directly exposed to U.S. tariff policies. With the United States accounting for about 30 percent of total group revenue, the company faces additional pressure from unfavorable currency exchange rates.

Adidas has quantified the combined negative impact from these tariffs and adverse currency movements at €400 million. Analysts at RBC noted that the resulting operational margin guidance of 8.5 to 8.8 percent for 2026 is well below the company's own long-term target of 10 percent.

Leadership Projects Confidence Amid Challenges

In response to investor concerns, the executive team embarked on a roadshow, presenting medium-term growth targets designed to restore confidence. For the 2027 and 2028 fiscal years, Adidas is aiming to return to high single-digit currency-adjusted sales growth. Furthermore, operational profit is projected to grow at a mid-teen percentage rate annually over the three-year period from 2026 through 2028. This forward-looking stance signals that current headwinds are viewed as temporary.

The board has extended the contract of CEO Bjørn Gulden, who has led the company since the start of 2023, through the end of 2030. This vote of confidence is accompanied by a substantial 40 percent increase in the dividend to €2.80 per share. It also follows a share buyback program of up to €1 billion, which was announced in January.

Investors will gain their first concrete look at how these tariff and currency pressures are materializing when Adidas releases its first-quarter 2026 results on April 29. This report will indicate whether the headwinds are hitting as forecast or if the conservative annual guidance leaves room for a positive surprise.
