The renewable energy developer ABO WIND AG is navigating the most challenging period in its nearly three-decade history. A recent drastic revision to its 2025 forecast has revealed an expected shortfall approaching €170 million, nearly double the previously anticipated €95 million loss. This adjustment marks the company's first projected negative annual result since its founding.

Financial Forecast Plummets on Impairments and Delays

Alongside the deepening loss, ABO Wind has also lowered its expected total performance for the year from €250 million to €230 million. Management attributes this severe correction to a combination of project delays, valued at €40 million, and substantial asset writedowns. A significant portion, €35 million, stems from necessary depreciations. These were triggered by shrinking profit margins and reduced feed-in tariffs not only in its core German market but also in other European countries, including Spain and Finland.

Creditors Provide Crucial Lifeline

Despite the bleak financial outlook, the company's immediate operational capacity has been secured through a critical agreement with bondholders. In a vote held in early March, over 99% of creditors agreed to suspend a key covenant until the end of 2026. This concession is vital for ABO Wind's survival, as it now enables the firm to once again provide collateral for new tariff bids and secure fresh financing. The deal forms the essential foundation for the ongoing liability restructuring and the continuation of business operations.

Pivoting from Developer to Independent Power Producer

Operationally, the Wiesbaden-based company is countering its challenges by securing new projects and accelerating a strategic transformation. In the latest tender by the German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), ABO Wind won bids for three solar parks with a combined capacity of 50 megawatts at an average price of 5.00 cents per kilowatt-hour. This success brings its total awarded solar capacity for 2025 to 107 megawatts.

Concurrently, leadership is pushing forward with a fundamental shift from a pure project developer to an independent power producer (IPP). A comprehensive efficiency program aims to realign the company's structures to a harsher market environment, with the goal of returning the group to a positive annual result as early as 2026.

Key Milestones on the Road to Recovery

The success of this turnaround plan will be measured against several concrete deadlines in the coming months:

  • 22 June 2026: Publication of the 2025 annual financial report.
  • 13 August 2026: Ordinary Annual General Meeting.
  • Autumn 2026: Planned start of construction for the newly awarded solar parks.

By these critical dates, the executive team must demonstrate that its strategic realignment is taking hold and that an operational turnaround is underway.
