The renewable energy developer ABO Wind is navigating its most severe crisis in three decades, even as its project engine continues to deliver. While facing an anticipated record loss of 170 million euros for 2025, the company is simultaneously demonstrating its operational viability through a string of international deals and strategic advancements in its home German market.

This contrast is stark. Lower feed-in tariffs, write-downs totaling 35 million euros, and international delays are driving the projected massive annual deficit. To preserve liquidity, a standstill agreement with key creditors has been in place since January 2026. Yet, against this difficult financial backdrop, the Wiesbaden-based specialist recently announced a series of closed transactions across continents. These include the sale of rights for a 63-megawatt wind project in New Brunswick, Canada, the completion of its first external owner's engineering contract for a solar project in Spain, and the receipt of a final payment for a 200-megawatt photovoltaic plant sold to an infrastructure fund in Colombia.

Back in Germany, ABO Wind is fortifying its position with a clear technological strategy focused on pairing solar generation with battery storage. This approach directly addresses the market problem of negative electricity prices during periods of high renewable output. Two projects in Baden-Württemberg exemplify this model. In Schönfeld, a 7.3-megawatt solar array will be coupled with a 2.7-megawatt battery storage system with 10 megawatt-hours of capacity, a project that already secured a bid in a Federal Network Agency innovation tender. Nearby in Schömberg, a solar park is nearing completion with modules largely installed, targeting grid connection in summer 2026. A 6-megawatt battery will follow in the second quarter of 2027, delayed by component supply issues, allowing the photovoltaic plant to generate cash flow independently in the interim.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ABO WIND AG?

The company's approved German portfolio is growing, now reaching approximately 650 megawatts. Recent tariff supplements from regulators for wind farms in North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg add 16.4 megawatts, while the short-term sale of project rights for the Nonnenholz II wind park provided additional funds.

Investors have taken note of these operational strides. In early March, bondholders gave near-unanimous approval to restructuring plans with a vote exceeding 99%, enabling the company to again provide collateral for future project tenders. This vote of confidence was reflected in the share price, which recently broke above the closely watched 50-day moving average, closing at 5.95 euros.

All eyes are now on the audited consolidated financial statements for 2025, due for publication on April 24, 2026. This report is expected to detail the substance remaining in the country portfolio after the recent write-downs and provide specifics on the management's comprehensive efficiency program. The success of this program is crucial for ABO Wind's targeted return to profitability in 2026. For now, the recent project successes offer a tangible, if fragile, foundation for that challenging journey.
