The Chinese automotive giant BYD is currently presenting a complex, two-sided story to global investors. On one hand, its domestic sales are experiencing a surprising and severe contraction. On the other, the company is achieving landmark successes in exports and battery innovation. This divergence highlights a pivotal strategic transformation underway at the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturer.

Export Milestone Overtakes Domestic Weakness

The most significant strategic shift is occurring on the international stage. In a historic first for the company, BYD's overseas vehicle shipments surpassed its domestic sales in February 2025. The automaker exported 100,600 units, marking a substantial 50% year-over-year increase.

The brand is gaining particular traction in Europe, where it overtook rival Tesla in new vehicle registrations across the continent in January. This global push is being physically supported by new local production facilities. Plants currently under construction or in trial operation in Hungary, Thailand, and Brazil are key drivers of this expansion. Company management has set an ambitious target of 1.3 million vehicle exports for the full year.

Mounting Challenges on the Home Front

This export triumph contrasts sharply with conditions in BYD's home market. Recent sales figures from China paint a challenging picture. Global sales for February fell 41% year-over-year to 190,190 vehicles. This represents the sixth consecutive monthly decline and the sharpest drop since February 2020. Sales of plug-in hybrid models were especially hard hit, declining by 44%.

Analysts point to a confluence of factors behind this downturn. Beyond expected production disruptions from the extended Chinese New Year holiday, structural headwinds are applying pressure. A new 5% purchase tax on electric vehicles, which took effect at the start of 2026, and the expiration of previous subsidy programs have significantly dampened consumer demand. Furthermore, competitors including Geely and Leapmotor are eroding BYD's market share in the crucial mid-price segment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Battery Breakthroughs Aim to Cut Costs

In response to these domestic pressures, BYD is countering with a major technological offensive. The company recently unveiled its second-generation "Blade Battery." This Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery can charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes, according to company statements. By utilizing a cell chemistry that avoids expensive metals like cobalt and nickel, the technology is designed to directly reduce production costs.

To support the extreme charging capabilities—which can reach up to 1,500 kilowatts per cable—BYD is rapidly expanding its proprietary infrastructure. The plan is to install 20,000 new fast-charging stations across China by the end of the year. To prevent overloading the public power grid, the company is integrating local storage batteries directly at these charging points.

All eyes are now on March 26 for concrete answers regarding the financial resilience of these substantial infrastructure investments and the trajectory of profit margins. On that date, BYD will release its complete financial report for the 2025 fiscal year. The data will reveal the true impact of recent price cuts in China on the overall profitability of the conglomerate.
