A Strategic Shift: BlackRock's Flagship Global ETF Reduces US Exposure

04.03.2026 - 03:58:26 | boerse-global.de

BlackRock's iShares MSCI World ETF reduces US equity allocation, adding 18 new holdings like AST SpaceMobile. The shift targets AI and satellite sectors ahead of larger 2026 index reforms.

In a notable departure from recent trends, BlackRock's iShares MSCI World ETF (URTH) has executed its most significant portfolio rebalancing in years. The key takeaway: a deliberate reduction in US equity allocation, marking a shift in strategy for the fund tracking developed markets. Effective March 2, 2026, the reconstitution introduces 18 new holdings while removing 27, signaling a pivot toward emerging growth sectors.

Thematic Realignment Drives Change

The rebalancing, implemented after market close on February 27, 2026, is driven by index provider MSCI's strategic focus on future-oriented industries. The fund is increasing its stake in artificial intelligence infrastructure and satellite communication, moving capital away from some established technology names. Major additions by market capitalization include AST SpaceMobile A, Coherent Corp, and FTAI Aviation, companies emblematic of this new thematic direction.

This reallocation resulted in a net reduction of nine US positions within the portfolio, with only eight new US additions failing to offset 15 removals. This ends a multi-year period of consistently increasing US weightings within the fund.

Notable Exits and International Reshuffling

Familiar names such as DocuSign and Paycom were among those deleted, having fallen below MSCI's required market capitalization thresholds according to the provider's assessment. The changes had a broad international scope, with Japan's Tokyo Metro and Trend Micro, alongside French payment specialist Edenred, also leaving the index.

The reshuffle introduced geographic diversity among the new entrants. The United Kingdom added Airtel Africa but lost DCC and Hikma Pharmaceuticals. Sweden gained security firm Verisure, while Austria's BAWAG Group joined the roster.

Institutional Activity and Impending Reform

Trading volume of 486,410 shares in the lead-up—significantly above the 279,650 average—suggests institutional investors adjusted their positions ahead of the official effective date. Passive funds typically execute such trades on the rebalancing date itself to minimize tracking error, often causing heightened volatility in the affected securities.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying MSCI World ETF?

Analysts view the March adjustment as a transitional step. MSCI deliberately limited its scope to avoid excessive market disruption ahead of a more foundational reform scheduled for May 2026. At that time, new free-float calculation rules are set to take effect, which are expected to trigger substantially larger portfolio shifts.

A separate ruling on the potential exclusion of companies holding significant cryptocurrency reserves has been deferred. MSCI has indicated it will conduct further market consultations before making a decision. It remains unclear whether the new methodology will reduce the fund's current high concentration in a few mega-cap stocks or largely maintain the status quo.

The iShares MSCI World ETF holds 1,320 securities with an expense ratio of 0.24 percent, representing approximately 85 percent of the developed world's investable market capitalization. Despite the recent changes, heavyweights like Nvidia (with a weighting around 5.47 percent), Apple, and Microsoft continue to dominate the fund's performance.
