The iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF (Acc) has concluded its initial quarterly rebalancing for 2026, revealing a notable strategic shift. For the first time in several years, the fund has executed a net reduction in its allocation to US equities. Concurrently, its portfolio adjustments signal a heightened emphasis on the foundational technologies powering artificial intelligence. However, these changes are merely a precursor to a far more significant methodological overhaul scheduled for May.

The Impending Overhaul: Why May is the Key Month

The recent rebalancing was deliberately kept relatively moderate in scope. Index provider MSCI limited the extent of the changes to avoid excessive transactions ahead of a major rules update set for May 2026. This upcoming modernization introduces a revised methodology for calculating free-float and adjusted rounding rules.

While these modifications may sound technical, their impact will be substantial. The new guidelines are expected to alter the calculable free-float shares of constituent companies, likely leading to noticeable shifts in the index weights of individual mega-cap stocks. A previously debated proposal to systematically exclude companies holding significant cryptocurrency reserves has been temporarily shelved for further market consultation.

Consequently, the first quarter's rebalancing marks an initial thematic realignment, but the true structural test for this $131 billion fund lies ahead. The coming months represent the most critical methodological phase for investors since the ETF's launch in 2009.

Portfolio Adjustments: AI Infrastructure Gains Prominence

The adjustments, which took effect in early March, brought a perceptible structural change to the world's largest ETF tracking the MSCI World index. The fund added 18 new holdings and removed 27 existing positions.

A clear theme emerged among the additions: US companies like AST SpaceMobile, Coherent, and FTAI Aviation. These firms share a common link through their indirect exposure to AI hardware and satellite-based communication technologies. This reweighting simultaneously resulted in the first net decrease in US equity exposure for the portfolio in years, although American technology stocks continue to dominate.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF USD (Acc)?

Trading near its 52-week high, the ETF closed at 112.87 euros recently, standing just 1.5% below that peak. This performance underscores the portfolio's underlying resilience despite its internal repositioning.

Market Activity and Regional Shifts

The index adjustment deadline triggered characteristically elevated trading volumes across the market. This surge is typical as passive investment vehicles like ETFs reconfigure their holdings to mirror the updated benchmark and minimize tracking error.

Changes were not confined to US markets. Regional shifts occurred elsewhere: in Japan, companies such as Ibiden and Shimizu gained index inclusion, while Tokyo Metro was removed. In Europe, the exclusion of French payment services firm Edenred was particularly notable.

The fund's strategic evolution is now clearly underway, with a far more consequential recalibration on the horizon for May.
