A Canadian Junior Miner Puts Its Turnaround to the Test This Summer

After a 96% share collapse, Highland Critical Minerals begins fieldwork at its Church lithium project and advances the Sy gold project, betting on fresh data to reverse its fortunes.

The numbers tell a brutal story. Highland Critical Minerals saw its shares collapse from C$5.82 in late 2025 to a record low of C$0.19 this spring, wiping out 96% of their value. The stock now trades at roughly C$0.20, languishing 82% below its 200-day moving average and underperforming the TSX Composite by nearly 93 percentage points over the past six months.

But the company is betting that fresh field data can change the narrative. Fieldwork at its Church lithium project in Ontario's Quetico District is set to begin at the end of May, funded by a recently closed private placement that raised C$400,000 through flow-through shares priced at C$0.25 each. These instruments offer Canadian investors tax advantages but strictly tie the proceeds to domestic exploration spending.

The Church project carries both promise and baggage. Historical rock samples returned lithium oxide concentrations of up to 1.18%, but a previous soil sampling program failed to identify any significant anomalies. The company now plans radiometric surveys, LiDAR scanning, and targeted sampling to pinpoint drill targets. The benchmark is set by the neighboring Georgia Lake project, which hosts a resource exceeding 10 million tonnes — a yardstick Highland must measure up against.

Management is also pushing forward with the Sy gold project in Nunavut's Yathkyed Lake greenstone belt. This sprawling property covers a 30-kilometer strike length where geologists have documented more than 40 high-grade gold occurrences. Historical surface samples yielded peak values of nearly 39 grams of gold per tonne. The catch: the underlying technical report is roughly 18 years old, and fresh field work will be essential to validate those historic results.

Before launching this summer campaign, the company underwent a radical restructuring. Highland reduced its stake in Highland Red Lake Gold from 73% to 17% through a spin-off, with shareholders receiving shares and warrants in the new entity in return. The move was designed to sharpen focus on the two core assets — Church and Sy — but the market has yet to reward the decision.

The coming weeks will deliver the first tangible test of Highland's turnaround strategy. The geophysical data from the Church project will form the foundation for any drilling programs later this year. For a junior explorer trading at pennies after a devastating rout, those results couldn't be more critical.
