The options market is flashing a contrarian signal on POET Technologies. On Tuesday, roughly 146,000 call options changed hands — a 138 percent surge above the daily average — as traders piled into bullish bets on the embattled photonics company. The stock opened at $7.11, still reeling from a brutal selloff that erased half its market value.

The catalyst for the crash was unmistakable. Marvell Technology canceled orders tied to the so-called Celestial AI projects, triggering a 50 percent collapse in POET’s market capitalization. That single event turned a struggling semiconductor firm into a battleground stock.

A Double-Edged ETF Arrives

Defiance ETFs launched the Defiance Daily Target 2X Long POET ETF (ticker: POEL) in May 2026, offering traders a leveraged bet on the stock’s daily moves. If POET rises three percent, POEL gains roughly six percent. The reverse applies on the downside, and compounding effects can distort returns over multiple sessions. The product is explicitly designed for active traders who monitor positions daily — not buy-and-hold investors.

The timing could hardly be more precarious. The ETF debuted just as a wave of shareholder lawsuits engulfed the company.

Legal Headwinds Mount

Several law firms are preparing class-action claims against POET Technologies. The allegations center on two issues: misleading statements about the company’s tax status and the mishandling of confidential information.

At the heart of the tax dispute is POET’s classification as a Passive Foreign Investment Company (PFIC) under U.S. tax law. Without proper disclosure, that status could carry adverse tax consequences for American shareholders. Cash in the Bank, Red Ink on the Books

Despite the turmoil, POET Technologies is not running on fumes. The company reported cash reserves of $430 million at the end of the fourth quarter of 2025. That war chest provides a runway for development projects even as the income statement bleeds red.

The numbers tell a stark story. In the fourth quarter, POET generated just $341,000 in revenue against a net loss of $42.7 million. For the full year, revenue barely touched $1 million while the net loss swelled to nearly $63 million.

Production Progress Offers a Counterweight

Operationally, the company is making headway. POET secured a $5 million production order and received a commitment for more than 30,000 optical engines — components destined primarily for AI data centers. LITEON Technology is a key partner.

A milestone is approaching in the second quarter of 2026: the 1.6T 2×DR4 module, developed with Lessengers, is expected to ship as a sample. That could provide a tangible proof point for the company’s technology.

Two Dates That Could Decide the Stock’s Fate

The next few weeks are packed with inflection points. On May 19, POET will report first-quarter results, giving investors their first look at production momentum since the Marvell fallout.

Then comes the annual general meeting on June 26, where shareholders will vote on a proposal to move the company’s legal domicile to the United States. Management sees the relocation as a solution to the PFIC tax headache. The vote falls just four days before the lead plaintiff deadline in the Rosen lawsuit.

Analysts remain largely bearish, with a consensus price target of $8.00 and sell ratings dominating the Street. For a stock that has already lost half its value, the options market is betting on a rebound — but the legal calendar and the production pipeline will ultimately determine whether that bet pays off.
