125 Million Steps: How German Companies Are Turning Workplace Fitness Into a Science

When employees at Aldi Süd closed out a step challenge in May, they had collectively logged 125 million steps — the equivalent of roughly 98,090 kilometers. The initiative, run jointly with health insurer Barmer, is part of a broader push by German employers and Krankenkassen to embed measurable physical activity into the workday, targeting cardiovascular health and counteracting the strain of sedentary or repetitive jobs.
A major scientific review released Friday now lends fresh weight to those efforts. An analysis published by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), covering 137 reviews involving more than 30,000 participants, concludes that building muscle does not require elaborate training regimens. Simple bodyweight exercises or resistance bands can deliver significant results. The researchers recommend roughly ten sets per muscle group each week, with every major muscle group trained at least twice weekly. Adequate protein — between 1.4 and 2.0 grams per kilogram of body weight — is key to supporting the process.
Alongside the new evidence, health insurers are rolling out hands-on diagnostics at the workplace. On Friday, AOK Bayern conducted a “Back Check” for its own staff, using direct measurement to spot muscular imbalances early and prevent back complaints. Earlier, in Bremen’s Überseestadt district, the event “AOK Move” attracted more than 400 employees who underwent InBody scans to analyse body composition and movement patterns. Partnering with MD Health & Performance, AOK showcased AI-driven tools for corporate health management (Betriebliches Gesundheitsmanagement, BGM), designed to tailor movement recommendations more precisely to individual needs.
As employers invest in innovative diagnostic tools and personalised movement plans, another critical piece of workplace wellbeing is ensuring that safety documentation meets legal standards. Without proper risk assessments and checklists, even the best health initiatives can fall short of compliance requirements. That's why over 37,000 UK companies already use the free Health & Safety Toolkit from Health & Safety Adviser. It includes ready-to-use templates for risk assessments, fire safety, PPE, and first aid, aligned with UK regulations. Download the free Health & Safety Toolkit
The importance of these measures was underscored by a milestone: on June 16, the Institute for Corporate Health Promotion (BGF) of AOK Rheinland/Hamburg will celebrate its 30th anniversary in Düsseldorf. Health prizes in the categories of Innovation and Holistic Approach will be awarded to companies during the event.
Beyond the workplace, public health outreach is expanding. On Saturday, the Bavarian Center for Cancer Research (BZKF) held an action day at the University Sports Center in Würzburg under the motto “Wir bewegen Bayern” (We Move Bavaria). Alongside sports activities and specific health checks, the opening was attended by Bavaria’s Health Minister Judith Gerlach and Minister-President Markus Söder. The focus was on the link between regular physical activity and disease prevention — a message that, as the ACSM review confirms, can be achieved with remarkably simple routines.
