- Vietnam plans to retain majority ownership of Vietnam Rubber Group while lowering its direct stake by 2030.
- Third-quarter profit reached a record level, but compensation and plantation liquidation contributed materially to earnings.
- Rubber prices, tapping volumes and land-conversion proceeds remain key variables for investors.
Vietnam plans to reduce its direct holding in Vietnam Rubber Group to 75% by 2030 from 96.77%, while retaining majority control, according to Reuters. The plan forms part of Vietnam's 2026-2030 programme for restructuring state capital, but the report did not specify whether the change would be carried out through a sale, placement or capital increase.
Record profit meets earnings quality questions
Vietnam Rubber Group posted third-quarter net profit of VND 3.679 trillion, up 68% year on year and its highest quarterly level, according to Vietnam.vn. Revenue for the first nine months reached VND 25.434 trillion, while after-tax profit rose 65% to VND 8.626 trillion.
The earnings mix remains important for investors. A report by TheInvestor.vn said rubber production and trading generated about VND 3.64 trillion in gross profit for GVR in the first half of 2026, while other profit exceeded VND 2.095 trillion. Compensation payments and proceeds from clearing rubber trees are significant contributors but are typically non-recurring, making latex prices, volumes and margins central to the sustainability of reported growth.
State plan leaves strategic control
The proposed ownership change would give the government room to reduce its stake without surrendering control. For investors, the timing and mechanism of any transaction remain material because a placement or sale could affect the shareholder structure, while a capital increase would carry different implications.
Business model and listed peers
Vietnam Rubber Group cultivates, harvests and processes natural rubber, and also operates in rubber products, wood processing, industrial parks, high-tech agriculture and renewable energy, according to its company profile. The group manages plantations in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and sells rubber products internationally. In the listed Vietnamese rubber sector, GVR is the diversified state-owned group, while Dong Phu Rubber, Phuoc Hoa Rubber and Tay Ninh Rubber are more focused plantation peers. Its relative performance will therefore depend not only on rubber prices but also on industrial-park development and land-related income.
