- Foreign investors sold VND 155 billion of Vietcombank shares on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange session covered by Vietnam News.
- Analysts expect continued volatility after the market's late-October correction.
- A recovery in the VN-Index would require stronger buying demand, according to TPS Securities.
Vietnamese shares extended their losses on Monday, November 2, as foreign investors increased selling in banking stocks. Vietnam News reported on November 3 that Vietcombank was among the banking shares weighing on the market.
Foreign selling weighs on banks
The VN-Index fell 30.9 points, or 1.77 percent, to 1,710.72 points on November 2. Banking and property stocks were among the largest drags, with Vietcombank, VPBank, BIDV and Vinhomes together accounting for more than 11.33 points of the decline.
Foreign investors were net sellers on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange, offloading more than VND 523 billion overall. Vietcombank recorded net foreign selling of VND 155 billion, behind Military Bank among the banking names cited in the report.
Volatility remains the market focus
Analysts expect the VN-Index to remain volatile as it searches for a new support level after the late-October correction. Asean Securities expects the index to fluctuate between 1,720 and 1,770 points in the coming sessions, while identifying 1,715 to 1,730 points as near-term support.
TPS Securities said a recovery would require stronger buying demand and confirmation over the coming sessions. A break below the cited support range could expose the market to further losses toward 1,680 to 1,700 points.
Vietcombank's banking franchise
Vietcombank is the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam and is headquartered in Hanoi, according to its investor relations page. It operates in Vietnam's commercial banking market alongside VPBank, BIDV and Asia Commercial Bank, which were also cited in the market coverage. The cited trading session positioned Vietcombank among the large banking stocks adding pressure to the benchmark.
