Unisem (M) Berhad's core net profit rose 171.2 percent year on year to MYR 19.8 million in the first half of fiscal 2026. The result gives the semiconductor packaging and test group a stronger earnings base as it prepares its next capacity expansion.

GP2 sets the next capacity test

According to The Star on September 22, 2026, construction of Gopeng Phase 2 is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of FY2026. The project is planned in two sections and carries capital expenditure of MYR 1.0 billion to MYR 1.1 billion.

The expansion is designed to add wafer bumping, probing and advanced wafer-level packaging capacity. Unisem has also raised MYR 467.5 million through the first tranche of a private placement, which is expected to provide part of the funding.

Profit leverage follows utilization

Gopeng Phase 1 is operating at 60 percent to 70 percent utilization, according to The Star. The immediate operating question is therefore volume loading rather than physical readiness, a setup that can allow incremental sales to support profit growth as fixed assets become more productive.

CIMB Securities upgraded Unisem to Buy from Hold and set a MYR 5.50 target price, KLSE Screener reported on September 21, 2026. The research house raised its earnings-per-share forecasts by 3 percent for FY2026, 69 percent for FY2027 and 64 percent for FY2028.

The main risk is execution. Unisem is seeking long-term customer agreements, customer-consigned equipment and potential upfront funding for GP2, measures intended to align new capacity with committed demand and reduce under-utilization.

Bursa Malaysia closes at MYR 4.23
