- Union Bank of India reported stronger quarterly profit and operating income for the period ended September 30, 2026.
- Margins and asset quality improved, while management highlighted a possible future expected-credit-loss impact.
- Management expects credit growth to remain broadly aligned with the banking system and is expanding automation and infrastructure-finance capabilities.
Union Bank of India reported a sharp increase in quarterly earnings for the period ended September 30, 2026, as stronger core banking income offset weaker treasury revenue. Investing.com reported that net profit rose 30.31 percent year on year to INR 5,537 crore, while operating profit increased 18.99 percent to INR 8,108 crore.
Margins and asset quality improve
Net interest margin rose to 2.86 percent from 2.80 percent in the previous quarter. Gross non-performing assets fell to 2.42 percent and net non-performing assets to 0.42 percent, while the slippage ratio improved to 0.72 percent from 0.91 percent a year earlier.
Global advances grew 18.53 percent year on year and domestic advances increased 17.36 percent. Deposits grew 6.88 percent, with the CASA ratio at about 35 percent. The figures point to faster loan growth than deposit growth, leaving funding expansion an important focus for investors.
ECL remains a future consideration
Management said the bank is preparing for a possible expected-credit-loss transition impact of about INR 5,500 crore. Executives said the bank had already built an additional provision buffer of roughly INR 1,000 crore and believed the potential charge could be absorbed, although the final impact remains subject to regulatory and industry discussions.
The earnings call also highlighted a decline of about 45 to 46 percent in treasury income, alongside a 22.90 percent increase in core income. Management said this mix underlines the bank's focus on lending, deposits and other recurring banking activities rather than volatile market gains.
Growth plans target banking technology
Management expects credit growth to remain broadly in line with banking-system growth. The bank is focusing on CASA and retail term deposits, while also using foreign-currency deposits, infrastructure bonds and other funding channels to support lending.
Union Bank is also expanding its technology agenda. Management said robotic process automation covered nearly 100 processes and could reach about 200 by March 2027, with a longer-term objective of 400 to 500 processes. The bank is building capabilities in data centers, renewable energy, battery storage, hydrogen, nuclear power and artificial-intelligence infrastructure finance.
Business model and competitive position
Union Bank of India is an Indian state-owned lender offering deposit products, digital banking services and loans including home, personal, gold and vehicle finance, according to its official website. It operates in India's public-sector banking market alongside State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank. A November 2 market report from Upstox grouped the lenders among the major public-sector names followed by investors. Union Bank's recent results position it as a growing specialist within that state-owned banking group, with improving asset quality and rising advances.
