- Tupras has agreed to assess US small modular reactor technologies for refinery operations.
- The study will examine technical, licensing, safety, economic and environmental considerations.
- The project supports the companys goal of becoming a carbon-neutral energy company by 2050.
Tupras is examining a potential new energy source for its refineries. World Nuclear News reported on Thursday, October 29, 2026, that the Turkish refiner signed an agreement with the U.S. Trade and Development Agency to assess small modular reactor technology.
Study targets refinery energy needs
The planned assessment will consider whether US-designed small modular reactors could supply electricity, heat and steam for refining processes. The work is scheduled to take about one year and will cover technical maturity, licensing, safety and security frameworks, fuel supply chains, economic performance and potential industrial applications.
Environmental factors will also be part of the review, including resource efficiency, waste management and water consumption. The study is intended to produce a roadmap for Tupras to evaluate whether and how the technology could be deployed.
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency said the cooperation could support Turkiye energy security and create opportunities for US technology exports. Tupras has set a target of becoming a carbon-neutral energy company by 2050, making the assessment part of its longer-term transition planning rather than an announced reactor investment.
Refining scale shapes the option
Tupras operates Turkiye refining activities and describes itself as the countrys leading energy company. Its investor-relations website cites refining capacity of 30 million metric tons and 416 MW of zero-carbon electricity, with operations focused on supplying energy and refined products to the Turkish market.
