- Refining and Chemicals delivered record earnings as diesel shortages widened refining margins.
- Trading and liquefied natural gas also benefited from higher energy prices.
- Management expects strong conditions to continue into the fourth quarter, while political scrutiny of windfall profits is intensifying.
TotalEnergies reported net profit of 8.3 billion US dollars for the third quarter on Thursday, October 29, 2026, up 124 percent from a year earlier. Le Monde attributed the increase mainly to tighter refined-product supplies and stronger refining margins.
Refining drives the earnings surge
TotalEnergies' refining and chemicals division generated a record 3.6 billion US dollars in earnings. That was twice the previous quarter and five times the year-earlier result, as refineries operated at high utilization and diesel markets tightened.
The group's trading business also remained strong, while liquefied natural gas benefited from higher commodity prices. Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanné said oil trading continued to outperform at a level comparable with the previous two quarters.
Strong results bring political pressure
The earnings increase has revived debate over windfall taxes because the gains arrived as fuel costs strained household budgets. The French government has urged TotalEnergies to support consumers by maintaining fuel-price measures and passing on benefits from the release of strategic diesel reserves.
Pouyanné said the company had already incurred a cost of around 500 million euros from its pump-price cap. He also warned that introducing a windfall tax could affect the policy, according to the report.
Energy company with a broad portfolio
TotalEnergies' company profile describes the group as a global integrated energy company that produces and markets energy. Its activities span electricity, hydrocarbons, low-carbon molecules and decarbonization solutions across the energy chain.
Based in France, TotalEnergies competes with integrated energy groups such as Shell and ExxonMobil. Compared with those larger international peers, the company occupies a similar broad oil, gas and power position while maintaining a distinct French and European base.
