Syngene International is undertaking a broad operational reset after several years of weaker growth, shrinking profitability and customer losses. In an interview published by Moneycontrol on November 2, Managing Director and CEO Siddharth Mittal said the turnaround had not yet happened and that the company still had substantial work ahead.

Commercial rebuild takes priority

Mittal said Syngene lacked strong commercial leadership for several years, leaving its customer-acquisition effort weak as competition intensified. The company has since appointed a commercial head, reorganised its sales teams and increased engagement with customers in the United States, Europe and Japan.

The operational reset follows a difficult first quarter but coincides with early signs of stabilisation. Revenue rose sequentially to INR 833 crore in the second quarter of fiscal 2027, operating EBITDA increased to INR 147 crore and the company returned to a net profit of INR 32 crore after a loss in the June quarter, according to Moneycontrol.

Biologics becomes the growth focus

Syngene plans to move parts of its discovery business toward higher-value fee-for-service work supported by artificial intelligence, automation and integrated scientific capabilities. Management sees contract development and manufacturing, particularly biologics production, as the longer-term growth engine.

The company has signed its first commercial manufacturing agreement for its Bayview biologics facility in the United States. Mittal said the facility and new customer contracts could support growth, although the benefits are expected to build gradually.

Syngene's stated business model covers scientific services from early drug discovery through development and commercial supply for pharmaceutical, nutrition, animal-health, consumer-goods and speciality-chemical customers, according to its investor overview. The Bengaluru-based company operates across research, development and manufacturing and is working to improve capacity utilisation and client retention. It competes in a demanding market that includes Indian rivals and Chinese contract research organisations, with pricing, speed and automation placing pressure on discovery services.
